Nikon D50. I am looking for a f2.8 Lense for all round Portraiture

Hi everyone, hope your all keeping well. I am looking around for a Lense for My D50 Body, to be used for Portraiture, Weddings, something of an all round lense, so i don,t have to be switching lenses, To hire or buy, Price dependent, My Kit lense, i think 70-200 has a problem, the barrell is strugling in the autofocus setting, i keep my lenses clean, but Dirt or something must have made it's way in, ok on Manual mode, zooomed out it does focus, but close up, it won't focus. so i would like to buy something that is good in lowish light, hand held, so i'm presuming i need a faster lense/ Or second hand good lense, could even trade in my kit lense part ex, i;m open to ideas, i'm always taking pictures, even when not doing a portrait. are there any millionares who'd like to pass on a nice lense, has i am in the poor bracket, ha ha. Thanks in advance guys!

I might even trade in my SB 800

Re: Nikon D50. I am looking for a f2.8 Lense for all round Portraiture

I think you are being a little ambitious in wanting a fast lens that will also be a general purpose lens. For weddings, I suggest you would want a 70-200 f2.8 and a 17-55 f2.8, ideally mounted on two bodies.

For portraits a Nikkor 50mm f 1.8 and a Nikkor 85mm f1.8 will cover most situations and are great value too.

If you have a 70-200, get it serviced and you are halfway there already - and you can also use it for portraits.

There are other options such as the Sigma 50-150 f2.8, but the reviews I've seen were indifferent and it is not wide enough for some wedding shots.

Re: Nikon D50. I am looking for a f2.8 Lense for all round Portraiture

Thank you all for your valuable contributions, not knowing all the Nikon lenses, and a pos Camera body change from the D50, which is my first Digital, I have shot Weddings in the past would you believe on a Old Pentax mz50 17-50, and had beautiful results, and the brides have been so happy, That's because i'm good at what i do, Ha Ha being a little ambitious in wanting a fast lens?, don't really understand?, Has i say i love Photography, not just weddings, I qualified with Royal Photographic Society, Portraits, And i have been using Cameras for many years, My Old Nikon El 50mm1:4 god them were the days, it's just i have never been up on all the lenses that are around, the D50 is my intro to the Digital world, and has done me well, as far as Nikon customer services are concerned and backup after you have bought there goods, well there's a lot to be said, when i phoned them for advice on my 55-200dx, i told them it was'ent focusing properly, this guy said you may as well chuck it in the Bin, for what it would cost to service," Should have gone Canon" It's just at one Wedding i went to the Lady Photographer had a single lense, at the time i did not get around to chatting with her. Saying that though isaw the photographs for that wedding, 20 shots for 700.00, and to me they were quite basic, in fact i had with me a little fuji 602z and the Photographs i took, not getting in the Photographers way, were far better than hers, in fact the bride when i gave them to her has a Wedding gift, was over the moon with my results, and was gutted at the quality. oh well you learn!, anyway i have strayed now, back to lenses, any advice given, will be soaked up and will make a decision from that advice, i don't even know what lenses will go with the D50, is it Dx type only? or are there certain other lenses that will fit this Body?, Thanks in Advance.
Pete.

The D50 is a cracking little camera. It is DX, but takes almost all lenses, including the older manual focus AI and AI-s. You can get prime 1.4's 1.8's whatever. Have a look at a couple of links

Grays of Westminster - Second Hand Nikon Equipment

Nikon Manual Focus Lenses - Aperture uk

I should add that these lenses can only be used in M manual mode.

I don't know of a fast lens that will have the focal length range to be considered an all round/general purpose lens. Most f2.8 lenses will have a zoom ratio of 3:1, whereas a general purpose lens on a crop factor body ought to be able to cover 18-200mm - a zoom ratio of 11:1.

That is why I said that I thought you were being a little ambitious in wanting a lens that was both fast and also have a range that is general purpose.

Re: Nikon D50. I am looking for a f2.8 Lense for all round Portraiture

Cheers Graham, valuable information, i have never really gone into lenses that much, for the amount of years i have been doing Photography, looks like i will have to do some learning on this.
When i was at my first collage doing City & Guilds, i was using a trusty Nikkormat The Nikkormat EL-W SLR Camera - Index Page
I did 8 City & Guilds using just my 50mm 1:4, how things have changed, thank you all for your input, i shall have a nosey on this, i have just picked up a book for the D70, i don't know if it's much different from the D50, when i have read it, anyone with a D70 who would like the book, give me a shout and will send it on to you! thanks again dabhand16 will go and nosey at the links now, and see if i can learn anything
