Nikon D50 - Lens

Hi, i have just bought a Nikon D50 (pick it up on Friday).

It comes with the standard Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED LENS

What do people recommend as a good zoom lens for it. I have seen some 55 - 200 lenses but what is a better buy.

Thanks

Sigma 70-300 APO is a good buy at around £180. Is that what you were thinking of in terms of budget?

If on a tight budget look for the 70-300 Nikon zoom on here....Sure it was around £68 !!! I borrowed the neighbours & although feeling cheap it produced great results for money !! You can always sell for same or more on EBAY if you decide to upgrade

I would look to spend around £300 on a really good lens as it would be an investment.
It is for sports and wildlife pictures. Some of the sports are the kids football.

if you can reach £400 you can get a sigma 70-200 f2.8 second hand which is a fantastic lens, other that that the sigma 70-300 apo dg as mentioned before is about £170 and great for the money.

Yeah, I bought one from 7dayshop. It's great for the money but if I was doing anything serious (I.e. not just as a hobby) I'd upgrade.
I spend more time taking shots at shorter focal lengths though

Sigma 2.8 is £460 from onestop. One word of warning though , go to something like Jessops to try 1st , as I was going to buy the 2.8 Sigma until I tried it on my camera....how heavy !!! For me it was too much to carry around on camera, although perfect for those who don't mind. Note nearly all the faster zoom lenses weigh more.

I was looking at the 70-300mm f4-5.6 APO DG Macro lens, same sort of price.

In the end though i bought a 70-300mm Nikon lens off ebay, it was only £50 (second hand), so will give this a try and then go from there.

Hi PPP, like yourself I'm also very new to all this sort of thing, but I can highly recommend the Sigma 70-300 Apo Macro, please see below the first pics I took with it this week.

http://www.thephotographyforums.com/...ead.php?t=5812

Hope this helps to make your mind up, if you are looking to buy have a good shop around I paid £185 which is quite high as I part ex'd too, but I've seen it around the £150 mark.

Glen.

The APO is just a better build quality.

it's £122 from onestop here

but of course with the possible quality control issues sigma have on these lenses id say go for a local shop so you can try it out. better to spend more and get a good one, than you get a cheap one and hate it.

ps APO also reduces coloured fringing. and its a sharper lens.
