Nikon D80 Compatible Lens

Dear all,

I currently have a D40 with the following:
Nikon AFS DX 18-55/3.5-5.6G ED II
Nikon AFS DX ED55-200/4-5.6G
Nikon 50mm f/1.8D
Tamron 90mm AF f/2.8 DI Macro

I have the possibility of obtaining a D80 and was thinking of the lens compatability. My questions are:

Will the AF-S lens continue use the AF on the D80?
Will the 50mm and Tamron 90mm be able to utilize AF whereas on the D40 they can't?
Is there an awful lot of difference between the D40 and D80? (Will be a dive kit plus cash exchange )

Many thanks,

Ian

Re: Nikon D80 Compatible Lens

I think that all of your lenses will work OK with a D80. The D40 needs the lens to have an AF motor built-in, but the D80 has an AF motor in the body.

Most D80 owners on here have not regretted their purchases, so I'm sure you won't either.

Sorry, another question and please forgive my ignorance, but if the AF-S lens have the motor built in, and the body of the D80, D200 etc have the motor in the body, how does the D80 determine to use the body motor as opposed to the lens motor. Or is it a case of it just does

Thanks

Re: Nikon D80 Compatible Lens

Can't deny that I don't lie awake at night worrying about this.

For all I know the D80 might well use the motor in the lens where one is available, and just the body motor for the lenses that don't, if you see what I mean.

Either way, it just works, so that is all I care about.

Sorry if this is not the answer you were hoping for, but the truth is I just don't know

I,ve just sold the D80 to get the D300, and I regret letting the D80 go,it,s a cracker Jag.

Enjoy...

PS. it has a tendency to underexpose by about half a stop.

I got the D80 this morning

Missus has been out on a "hen" day up the West End, the little un has spent the day with Nana and I've been watching rugby, football and going through all the settings on the D80. The autofocus seems so much quicker than the D40, (it might just be my excitement!) but it's nice being able to use autofocus on the nifty fifty and the Tamron 90mm macro

The D80 will use the motor in the lens if the lens has one, otherwise it uses the body motor. If you look at the mount on a lens that doesn't have a built in motor, you can see something that looks a bit like a screwdriver slot and this engages with the body motor. Lenses with a built in motor don't have this. The contacts on the lens are different as well. Basically, the D80 will know what kind of lens you're using and use the appropriate motor. I have lenses of both types, the only difference you'll notice is that it's more noisy when using the body motor. Hope this helps.

Re: Nikon D80 Compatible Lens

Jag,
I had mine set on 31 in menu, it delays the shutter a split second while the mirror clears .
It takes some getting used to, but the pics are sharper with the delay, because you haven,t got the vibration going on.
Good shooting.
