Nikon D80 Lens question!

hi, i used to be way into 35mm stuff way back when but i fell out of it with the entrance of digitals, and now i've found that the technology has gone waaaaaay over my head!

i'm pretty set on buying the Nikon D80 (although i still sometimes muse over the canon rebel xt - and now i'm getting confused about all the reviews telling me to abandon the 80 and go for the D40! too man choices!) but i'm not sure about lenses. Should i buy the kit lens for the D80? if so, what range? or should i just buy the body and buy a lens separately?! i'm really really lost and need to decide soon. I'm going on a dig (i'm an archaeology student) in Israel in a couple of months and i want to bring a smashing camera with me! what better place to get back into photography? Obviously as a student i'm concerned about money, but i also feel that there is no point buying something that isn't going to work for me, or has no really shelf life - so i'm more likely to bite the bullet and shell out if i have to. But i'd still like to save money if i can. If there are any other accessories you think i should be looking at let me know!

thanks!

Re: Nikon D80 Lens question!

You don't have to buy a 'kit' - that is a body and lens together, although you can get good deals if you do. many places will offer kits that include third party lenses, or, of course, you can buy separately.

Most people think that the 18-200 range lens is the ultimate 'all in one', but the 18-70 Nikkor is very good and can be bought for around £150 or as a kit. The 18-200 will be a lot dearer, but will give you more reach.

Re: Nikon D80 Lens question!

so i'm guessing whether or not it's VR makes a big difference? and probably even so for me because i tend to have rather unsteady hands (i'll never be a surgeon!). The best prices i've run across have been on Amazon but the 18-200mm VR seems to run around 600-700 bucks best case scenario. I'm not sure i could pull that one off! not right now anyway. Amazon sells the d80 body for 729 on it's own, but also has a VR lens with a 18-55 range included for 889, i don't know that much about this stuff but amazon also sells a VR lens that is 55-200mm for 221. Would it make sense to mayeb buy the nikon D80 with the 18-55 AND the 55-200mm to cover the whole range rather than pay the 700 for the 18-200? the more i learn, the less i know!

thanks a lot everybody! i really appreciate the help!
