Nikon d80 zoom issues - please help!

Hello all!
I'm having problems with my Nikon d80 camera (or the lense, i dont know!)
Actually it works perfectly fine on Auto, portraits etc.
Problem is when i want to take like really close-up pictures, it seems the auto zoom function just stops working, it zooms all the way in and out again, without gaining focus once (dont know if that makes any sense, please excuse my limited english).
This is really bugging me out, i've been roaming the Camera's menu for about 2 hours, managed to mess up everything a couple of times, so i had to press reset.
even after the reset it still wouldn't take my beloved closeups.

Help Is very much appreciated, since I really dont have the money to send it to repair.
Hope to hear from someone!

Kind regards
Robert

How close is close?

Are you too close for the lens to be able to focus?

Can you post the model number of the lens please?

Hello and thank you for the quick response!
By close i mean from around 30-40cm and down (2 feet).

The model number is:
242774
AF-S NIKKOR 55-200mm 1:4-5.6g (ED)

Hope it helps!

Re: Nikon d80 zoom issues - please help!

Have you tried manual focus? You might be trying to focus on something too close as Jason said, or maybe there is not enough contrast in your subject for the camera to focus properly.

If you can't get focus manually your subject is too close. If you can focus manually there is insufficient contrast for the auto focus to work.

You will also be able to focus closer using a wider angle, so what focal lengths are you using?

Minimum focus distance for this lens is about 1m.
