It had to happen I suppose, they can't go on producing film cameras in the face of shrinking demand. I can't help feeling a bit gutted -end of an era.

Wasn't the F80 used as a base for cameras like the Fuji S series - as well as the D70, of course...

Bit of a shame, but that's progress, I suppose...

Guess that really shows how much digital is replacing film if they are going to end almost all film production. Shows that everyone and their dog are now showing true faith in digital, where previously a few (especially pros) had expressed slight doubts about its ability to cope.

Should lead to yet more price reductions on the basic kit like bodies (hopefully).

It's sad to see film start to leave, but was bound to happen sooner or later.

I for one would still use film, if it didn't cost so much money in films and processing costs, I used that point alone to justify my purchase of a digital slr

So who wants to take bets on when Canon will follow and drop film cameras??

Can't be long I'd imagine Sam. With Kodak stopping the sale of film cameras too, the writing is really on the wall now for film. The question is how long can they go on producing film for a rapidly diminishing market?

A friend of mine has a photographic shop and does film processing. He tells me he sees evidence that a lot of people still prefer film for holiday snaps for the convenience of just handing snaps around for people to look at, but once people cotton on to the fact that they can get the same service from digital it'll really be Goodnight Vienna for film I reckon.

Anybody want to buy a developing tank and thermometer?

I managed to sell my old Jobo last year for £2500. Thankfully...

Actually, the Mrs sold it for me while I was in Afghanistan . And bought a new boiler for the house

That's women for you Rob - totally impractical.

My mate with the shop was also saying that there's still a market as yet for the real bottom end 30 quid film camera, probably because of the price jump to the equivalent digital camera, so he sells a fair few to the occasional use holiday snappers.

Won't be long though - pretty soon all mobile phones will have 6Mpi cameras built-in to them - what price a compact film or digi camera then?

That'll probably start the demise of the low end compact cameras

If you want a camera your choice will be phone, bridge or dslr

As a side note to this, rumour has it Nikon will be announcing a couple of new lenses soon..

Apparently a 70-300mm VR is on the cards (unfortunately not an f/2.8 though )

I don't think that really applies to the 35mm market though. The percentage of meduim format users that have gone digital is obviously far smaller than 35mm. Not the the quality hasn't been passed by digi capture but the cost is huge. As for large format, digi has 5x4 firmly in it's sights and while scanning trannies for printing is now common place most people still shoot on film.

We've got the new LEAF backs for the Hasselblads up at the school and I must say the 60Mb RAW file takes some beating.
