NIKON HELP!!! DX or FX lense

Hello Everyone,
Need your input on lens recommendation .

My camera: Nikon D300s (DX crop)
Lens I like: Nikkor 24mm 1.4 (Approx $1900)

I am looking for a really fast, wide crisp low light lens.
My current choice is 24mm 1.4 FX, I used this lens once on my camera and really enjoyed it. This lens performs approximately as 36mm on my camera since d300s is dx crop format.
I have never tried any dx lenses on my camera, but my thought has always been to buy fx lenses, since in the future if I will upgrade my camera to fx format, I will have all lenses already, no need to buy new ones.

Please help me with following:
1. Does Nikkor 24mm 1.4 perform worse on my camera since its dx?
2. Does it make more sense to go with a DX lense (35mm f/1.8G), this lens is $200. vs $1900 for fx 1.4.
3. Is there performance difference of fx vs dx lenses on my d300s sicne its dx format?
HELP!!! HELP!!!

Re: NIKON HELP!!! DX or FX lense

I wouldn't think that an FX lens will lose any performance from being used on a DX camera. I also think that if you are definitely going to get a full frame camera eventually, it makes sense to buy FX lenses, but the cost differential would make me think twice unless money is not an issue

Looked after good lenses hold their value well, so you will be able to sell the 35mm f1.8 DX easily when the time comes, and the $1700 you save can be put towards the FX camera.

The D300 will handle any lens that you use on it. I know someone with a D90 who has a 24-70 f2.8 and a 70-200 f2.8 vr.

Re: NIKON HELP!!! DX or FX lense

Thank you for advice.
How do the 2 stack up the 24mm 1.4 vs 35mm 1.8DX.
I never tried 35mm dx myself; but by looking around the web for sample pictures, i could see huge difference in quality of 24mm vs 35mm; Am I correct?

Re: NIKON HELP!!! DX or FX lense

I can't comment on comparing the two lenses as I have never compared images from either of them, I would never use images the I see on the internet for judging the quality of lenses as there are too many variables.

The only way that such a comparison could be valid is for the same photographer to shoot the same image at the same time with both lenses on the same camera and then do the same processing and uploading procedure to the same host. Then you have to be viewing the images with a decent calibrated monitor.

If you look on Ken Rockwell's web site you will see that he often concludes that cheap lenses are as good as if not better than their expensive fast brothers. As an example he says that the 18-55 Nikkor kit lens is as good as the 17-55 f2.8.

Re: NIKON HELP!!! DX or FX lense

The other thing to consider is that if the 24mm is better, is it 10 times better?

Simon Stafford will be able to answer your question as he has experience of just about every Nikon product that has been made. He also writes guide books on everything Nikon.
