Not that smart

I have recently had a problem charging my high capacity AA batteries for my flash with my "smart" charger.
I put them in the charger and it showed it was not re - charging, I left them in all day with no result.
I was not impressed as they were only just a year old, then whilst looking for something I came across an old (8 or 9 years) charger, I decided to see if it still worked, guess what , it re - charged the batteries in 3 hours!
Out of curiosity I put them back in the "smart" charger and it started to charge them!
So before you bin any batteries try them in an old type charger, it seems if they are very discharged a "smart" charger can't do the job.

Re: Not that smart

You are right Charles. I knew this as I'd read about it a while ago, but I'm amazed that it is not more well known.

The curious thing is that my smart charger has a function where it will cycle discharge and charge cycles to optimise the battery capacity. It will do this up to 20 times, but if it is discharging them how does it re-charge? I guess it will not discharge below a certain level.

Re: Not that smart

I think you are right Graham, below a certain level it wont re - charge, I had used the batteries and then swapped them for my backup ones and forgot them for a few weeks so they were very low.
