Question not sure which lens .....

hi
here's the story, i need an all rounder kinda lens, i shoot with 400d along with 70-200 f4 is usm, and the 18-55 and would like to replace the 18-55 for a better image quality. i use the 70-200 outdoors, family events, picnics, outings etc..
but i need something for indoors, limited space,in the car, family group photos etc..
here's the list of the lenses im considering
Sigma AF 30mm f/1.4 EX HSM DC
Sigma AF 20mm f/1.8 EX
Canon EF 28mm f/2.8
Canon EF 35mm f/2
Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 USM
Canon EF 24mm f/2.8
Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM

but here's the problem, i would love to have the apertures that these lenses have
but i think that EF-S 17-85mm f4-5.6 IS USM will give me more flexibility and will be more handy in my case.

im under the impression that those prime lenses listed will produce a better quality than the 17-85? im not sure... and a nicer bokeh ? colours?
i dont have a flashgun so a large aperture would be handy but then again its a prime lens(im used to zooming in and out and probably wont like the idea of being 'stuck' with a fixed focal length
i dont wanna have to buy both lenses to have the best of both worlds so i guess its just a matter of which one i REALLY NEED ?
im considering buying 17-85 and the nifty fifty but for me 50mm is a lil too much, i might as well use my 70-200, thats why 50mm is not on the list, i prefer 30mm and below.
any suggestions ?.......
thanks in advance

If you think that a zoom will give you some flexibility, why not take a look at the Sigma 17-70 f2.8?

Re: not sure which lens .....

I have to say I agree with Dabhand. I am a prie guy, cause I just love my primes! However here is the thing. What are you using your photos for? From your discription I assume you do some sort of wedding or event photography. Will the image quality of your photos (printed at whatever range of sizes your clients usually want) justify switching from zooms to primes. There is no doubt in my mind that the image quality of primes are better but is it THAT much better for what you need it for?
Personally, I shot with a Canon for a short while and only really had the 18-55 non IS kit lens to work with and in reality I thought that was a good little lens and to be honest noone other than myself and other photoGeeks were able to tell how much better or worse the image quality was than to a fancier and more expensive lens. With that said I would suggest you look into saving up for the Canon 17-55 f2.8 as it is worth it in the long run. Short of that I would strongly suggest the TAMRON 17-50 f2.8 or the Sigma that Dabhand suggested. I personally have the Tamron and love it.
Lastly, in my humble opinion, I would suggest two things. 1) Get yourself a flash and learn to move your flash off camera. Not only will it improve the quality of your pictures, but it will open up alot more flexiblity to your pictures that most people will appreciate rather than just photoGeeks. Check out Strobist
2) Sorry but I have to say this...learn to LOVE primes! - LOL yeah alot more feet moving but it is awesome, but for some things you just can't move around so a good zoom is good as well.
Cheers
