Opinions on my next lens...

Hey everyone im still new to photography and need some help on my next lens..... I have the nikkor 18-200 VR lens which is my all around "great" lens and the a 18-135 nikkor lens which came w/ the camera. I will be selling the 18-135 lens so that I can get a different "better lens". I am in b/w a wide angle lens or a good quality standard lens , like an AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4D or the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G. In your best opinion which would be the better buy for me at this time. Any suggestions on a lens would be great too!!!! I have a Nikon D80 camera.

Re: Opinions on my next lens...

You have the 50mm covered so next should be a wide angle something like a 10mm to something, that should do for landscapes, or if you go the other way a 150 to 500mm for wild life but you will have to have a really good think which way you want to go.......these optics cost a lot of dosh and there is not a lot of it around!

Re: Opinions on my next lens...

Your 18-200 VR lens should cover your landscape requirements - fabulous lens not to be underestimated. Therefore I'd suggest going for a prime - 50mm 1.4 - for the indoor portraits you mention, and it'll do very well for landscapes as well

Thanks for the info Charlotte!!! One im sure stupid question i need to ask is what does the prime mean and also I was looking at the nikkor 50mm 1.4 but one is a 1.4G and the other 1.4D and i cant find any info on whats the difference:confused

A major concern should be do you really need it, there's an awfull lot of expensive glass laying around in camera bags that is used very little.

The 1.4G has internal focus motor, the 1.4 D is spigot driven from the camera body. In my humble opinion the 1.4 G is the better lens.

Unfortunately i would say yes The biggest problem I'm having is low light situations and Since my 18-200 lens at 18mm is only F/3.5 its a problem and thats to wide for me The 50mm w/ F/1.4 im sure would help in this area, would this be correct?

Thanks samleo!!!!! I agree w/ you the G sounds better as my 18-200 also has the internal motor and its great and fast!!

Re: Opinions on my next lens...

But a word of advice ... don't fall into the trap of shooting every portrait at f/1.4 especially close ups, or the depth of field will be too shallow.

When the light falls low then up the ISO sesitivity to 400 - 800 -1600 theres no problem a bit of noise used to effect does no harm!
