Pentax K10D Wide Zoom or Prime?

Hi everyone.
After much research regarding choosing between a wide zoom (16-50mm or 17-70mm) and a prime lens (wide to "not that wide"), I am wondering if a anyone knows of actual technical reviews on the subject.
I am looking for a lens that is suitable for indoor/outdoor, that has great optics, especially for great DOF/perspective with clean detailing, also capable of doing portrait that are "true to the eye".
Since I have a K10D, I would appreciate any comments/advice on the subject.
Thans!

Who has the most beautiful sunsets then?

From what you describe as your list of things you want it to do, a wide zoom sounds like what you need.

well if you dont want to shell out at least a grand on a fast wide zoom, i say get a 50mm prime(extremelly cheap) and a wide prime, like a 14mm.

both will have very fast aperatures, and you'll save bunches of money.

We still certainly have the most beautiful sunsets!
I'll have some more to my galerie very very soon!
So, a wide zoom ... what do you have in mind, may I ask? Just for curiosity, so I can go and check some websites if they have done tests on them!
Thanks!

A fast wide zoom is what? near f/2.0 ... f/1.8 ? Or is a f/2.8 sufficient when we talk about speed?
I did think about a very good 50mm prime @ f/1.4 but I thought the 14mm, on average, were quite expensive too, am I wrong?

Re: Pentax K10D Wide Zoom or Prime?

a fast zoom is usually f2.8, but you are going to shell out a lot of money to get it. im not to sure about pentax, but the nikon equivelent is about $1500USD.

the pentax 14mm is about $600USD, and im not certain but i think the pentax 50mm f1.4 cant be more than $200USD. so if you dont mind having the inbetween lenghts then save yourself half the money and buy two primes. plus primes have extremely good IQ.

even if you dont get the 14mm, i strongly encourage you to get that nifty fifty, every self-loving photographer should have one!

Re: Pentax K10D Wide Zoom or Prime?

well after looking at pentax's WS i saw that the 16-50 f2.8 goes for about 900USD. now the primes are still a good option, but i stand corrected on my finances above.

sorry~ jj
