Pentax K10D Wide Zoom or Prime?
Hi everyone.
After much research regarding choosing between a wide zoom (16-50mm or 17-70mm) and a prime lens (wide to "not that wide"), I am wondering if a anyone knows of actual technical reviews on the subject. I am looking for a lens that is suitable for indoor/outdoor, that has great optics, especially for great DOF/perspective with clean detailing, also capable of doing portrait that are "true to the eye". Since I have a K10D, I would appreciate any comments/advice on the subject. Thans! |

Who has the most beautiful sunsets then?
![]() From what you describe as your list of things you want it to do, a wide zoom sounds like what you need. |

Re: Pentax K10D Wide Zoom or Prime?
well if you dont want to shell out at least a grand on a fast wide zoom, i say get a 50mm prime(extremelly cheap) and a wide prime, like a 14mm.
both will have very fast aperatures, and you'll save bunches of money. |

We still certainly have the most beautiful sunsets!
![]() I'll have some more to my galerie very very soon! So, a wide zoom ... what do you have in mind, may I ask? Just for curiosity, so I can go and check some websites if they have done tests on them! Thanks! |

I did think about a very good 50mm prime @ f/1.4 but I thought the 14mm, on average, were quite expensive too, am I wrong? |

Re: Pentax K10D Wide Zoom or Prime?
a fast zoom is usually f2.8, but you are going to shell out a lot of money to get it. im not to sure about pentax, but the nikon equivelent is about $1500USD.
the pentax 14mm is about $600USD, and im not certain but i think the pentax 50mm f1.4 cant be more than $200USD. so if you dont mind having the inbetween lenghts then save yourself half the money and buy two primes. plus primes have extremely good IQ. even if you dont get the 14mm, i strongly encourage you to get that nifty fifty, every self-loving photographer should have one! |
