PMA 2008 - Highlights and surprises?
The 2008 PMA (Photo Marketing Association) Show in Las Vegas has drawn to a close, with the usual rush of new product announcements from the major manufacturers. Things are likely to quieten down now until around September when there will be another round of new releases in time for Photokina etc.
So has anything grabbed your attention or your wallet? Or has it been a bit disappointing, and are the equipment manufacturers running out of new gizmos to part us from our cash?I'll start off by saying that one surprise was the lack of a replacement/upgrade for the Canon 5D. This was launched in the Autumn of 2005 and I'd expected a new model with live view and an upgraded sensor/processor in line with the newer Canon cameras. But it didn't happen. Any views?

No my money is staying under my bed for now.......waiting for a 1DMKIIIN
. Just seen that Canon have come up with another fix for the AF in addition to the sub-mirror fix they are carrying out at the moment. Also surprised not to see an update to the 5D. |

Wonder if Nikons recent D300 & D3 have forced Canon to go back to the drawing board to ensure their next models leap frog Nikons latest models

Re: PMA 2008 - Highlights and surprises?
Tbh I was kinda surprised not to see a 5D replacement, but after thinking about it I'm actually not that surprised at all. Nikon didn't release a full frame camera to compete against it so why bother to update it!
![]() What I was very happy to see was Sigma's long zoom lens releases with both Stabilisation and HSM focusing (details in our news section). I'll be looking closely at the reviews for these.

Re: PMA 2008 - Highlights and surprises?
I was quite chuffed to see Nikon updating their PC lens line, starting with the 24mm f/3.5. I've had comissions in the past where I've ended up having to shoot using standard lenses and perform perspective correction in Photoshop - and the results are never ideal.
Having a full line of tilt & shift lenses will mean I've got more options when it comes to product photography and architectural/exterior shoots. |
