Portable memory device...

Instead of purchasing loads of compact flash memory cards that will probably only get used on my next holiday, i was wondering if there are any affordable ways of 'uploading' the cards contents to a portable device thus freeing up the space on the card. Thoughts or suggestions appreciated... Thanks

Re: Portable memory device...

You mean like this?

There are other similar devices too - Epson and orher makes do them. I think I remember someone offering one for sale in the classifieds a while back.

Re: Portable memory device...

The only thing is that many of these portable stores are now relatively expensive compared with the price of memory cards which has fallen a great deal in recent times. Also they rely on an internal hard drive which is less robust than a flash card.

it depends on how much storage you'll need, but you may find that it's cheaper and safer to buy additional cards.

Re: Portable memory device...

There are a lot out there but I am big convert to the Nexto Ultra it's the fastest around with excellent battery life and if you shop around you can get 200GB for less than £150. I do tend to use it as a backup rather than to free up the cards though. If you are going to where it's remotely civilised then get your cards burnt to DVD every so often then post the DVDs back as a backup against losing everything.

Re: Portable memory device...

I have an Epson P2000 which has a 40G Byte drive. I have found this to be reliable and useful. However, it is a luxury item and I would think it more sensible to buy more cards for most people.

Re: Portable memory device...

Probably worth mentioning that some of these devices have a viewing screen and some will not. Some will have bigger screens than others. Don't ask me which ones are which, though.

Not suggesting any that are listed here necessarily don't have screens, but I'm sure that there are some out there.

That depends on many things. Length of trip - number of photos shot - review of images - boredom factor!

I could see some people wanting to weed out stuff to save time on returning to base or just wanting to review the images.

I quite agree that some will not be bothered about a screen too, but just thought I'd point it out for info.

I agree Putting a full colour LCD screen on the device doubles the cost. though..A personal choice then.

Re: Portable memory device...

I bought the Archos (AV140, 40GB) to back up my pics - essential for both my Everest Trek (used a solar charger to keep it in power) and my Oz/NZ trip (6k pics - and an external H/D on a laptop too). When I'm 'at home' I use it to listen to MP3s when I'm out walking/'togging: 'The hills are alive with the sound of music........'

Definitely plus the battery life on a non VGA screen version is much longer. I went from a P4000 (Sold on here) to a non screen version because I didn't use the screen much and the battery life was an issue. Other devices are much much quicker than the Epson when it comes to copying from the card as well which can get very annoying with 4 and 8GB cards.

Re: Portable memory device...

If anyone's interested, I have a SmartDisk FlashTrax XT which I never use these days and would be happy to sell for a nominal sum - say, £20 + postage. It works fine with CF cards and also displays RAW images.

SmartDisk sold out to someone else a while ago and the FlashTrax is now obsolete, so spares and repairs could be a problem.

Re: Portable memory device...

I also have the Epson P2000 and love it to bits. It has 40Gbs storage space but they do an 80gig version if you really want it.

But for me the main reason for getting it was the screen which is SUPERB! If you want to view your pictures on a larger screen and in crisp high res, this screen is absolutely gorgeous. Luscious colours and you can zoom in very close to check focus etc.

BUT these things are not cheap so you need to have a need if that makes sense. If money is not an issue, I would wholeheartedly recommend one.

Cheers,
Rob

I have an old GigaVu pro which cost me £400 back in the day for a 40Gb hard disk with screen.

Now you could spend £95 on the one above or you could just buy 80Gb of memory cards (based on the other thread), or spend £40 today to get 32gb and £40 in six months which will buy you almost double by then.

Ah hell, it depends how big a shooter you are...I'm rambling now...I suppose I'm just questioning the value of one of these devices since memory is so cheap in comparison - just over £1 per Gb

Re: Portable memory device...

You could always get two of these: New USB 2.0 CF Compact Flash Card Adapter Reader Writer on eBay, also, For Multimedia Secure Digital, Digital Memory Card Readers, Photography (end time 30-Nov-08 13:50:30 GMT)

and one of these Redstore.com - Belkin USB Anywhere USB Data Copier Silver

Then you could just duplicate your flash cards and post the copies home. With 1GB CF cards for less than £6 these days, it could be very cheap insurance.
