True re testing other lenses. As stated I did try my 70-200 F4 L,

I'm aware some lenses are slightly softer wide open, but I have never experienced this form of flare or such a difference between a 1/3 of a stop before on a lens

Re: Problems with Canon 24-105mm @ F4

I agree there Dave, but as DC says it is usually a good idea to avoid shooting wide open unless there's absolutely no choice - and usually there is today with better high-ISO performance. An f/4.5 lens is OK for most purposes, especially if the optical performance is good at this aperture, and there's the bonus that focusing is at f/4 so will be slightly quicker.

I think the only way to resolve this is to send the lens to Canon and let them check it out. You could mention that the issue has been raised on a prominent photo forum and many people will be interested in their comments.

I tend to take Silkstone's point of view. How many times are you going to take a shot like the ones used for comparison? In everyday usage I cannot fault my 24-105 and if the pixel-peepers make out that it is faulty then with PS and circumstances, I reckon I could find a fault with most lenses - Nikon included Jack .

Re: Problems with Canon 24-105mm @ F4

mine is pin sharp at f/4 and even then I don't use it as much anymore as I use the 24-70 for 2.8

Just send it back and let them sort it. You may pay initial postage but it is peanuts if it gets it right. And if you have to send it in twice then it isstill worth it as the lens is great when sharp.

Or you could buy mine if I go D3 and D700

Dave you don't mention what focal length you shot at, or if the lens was manually focused?

I'm guessing '105mm' and 'yes' though?

I've got to send my 70-200 f2.8L back to Canon. Last couple of races I've shot it's not been sharp Only bought it in April and it's not been knocked or anything.

Tried at different combos & yes manual focus, at 10x view on Live View to ensure pin sharp focus. Also tried AF etc, different exposure modes etc, all with same results.

Sorry to hear of your problems - I've not actually checked mine. But, depending on how I fare in a few mins (off to try a D300), I could be selling all my gear over the next few weeks, to get D300 + some zooms and primes (not totally decided yet!), in which case, I'd be glad to check my lens for you, and post results, and if you're happy, you'll get it for secondhand price .

Are you guys keeping the lens? Have anyone got a problem-free replacement yet?

Re: Problems with Canon 24-105mm @ F4

I have sent lens back to Canon & they have admitted they can replicate problem, but worrying thing is, they can also replicate on ALL new 24-105 lenses

My plan is to sell & buy a couple of years old version, where the problem is less prominent. Poor quality control by Canon in my eyes
