Question?
Ok, where to start. I am really curious...I have the Canon 70-300 IS USM lens. I love it. It can get some good pictures if the person(me) holding the camera has everything together--settings, etc.
I am seriously looking at getting the 24-105L lens. I have read where people use their telephoto lens for everything. I can see where the telephoto lens makes things seem flatter and the wider lenses had more depth. Then there are people who like the different ranges of other lenses. I have 30 days to try both lenses and see which I like better, but since I can only have one now I would like your advice on which would serve me better for now. Thanks!

Re: Question?
That is a bit like saying 'What car should I buy?'
I think you will get more out of the 24-105. Unless you are going to be shooting more wildlife or sports than anything else, it has a more useable range. |

Re: Question?
Dabhand16 you are so right....I have been thinking about this for some time and with time it gets more confusing. I do see the 24-105 more useful. I will miss the telephoto tho. Wish I would win the lottery

Re: Question?
Ah but.....when you get rid of the 70-300 there will be times when you wish you still have it. I have had the 70-300 and do have the 24-105 and the latter is my "on the camera walkabout lens" so highly recommend that one. If you sell and buy there will come a time when you will want a good zoom again and the 70-300 is a cracking piece of kit. Can you not hang on to it and save for the 24-105?

Re: Question?
I get my 24-105 today. I have been thinking about hanging onto the 70-300. I went out last evening and took some pictures with my 70-300 to kinda say good-bye to it
. I wish I hadn't gotten the 70-300 first because I do hate to part with it. The Air Show is coming here next month and I could get some good pictures with that lens. I will know in the next couple days what I will do.

Re: Question?
A hard choice. You really need to decide what sort of pics you most want to take. If your photography is dominated by air shows, sport, wildlife etc. then the long lens is essential. If you are into landcapes and architecture, you need a lens which is wider than the 24-105mm. On the other hand if you are into general photography including photographing people and general scenes then the 24-105mm will be an excellent choice.
If you are like me and photograph anything, you really need a set of lenses to cover the complete range. I think you are doing the right thing and choosing good quality lenses and just buying one at a time as and when you can afford it. My 28-70mm Canon Zoom has just developed a fault (21 years old) so I plan to replace it with the Canon 24-105mm f4 IS which I understand is an excelllent lens. I would expect it to be the lens I leave on the Camera. |
