I wonder if we can expect to see Canon produce something similar in the near future?

It’s a funny range to cover though, from almost very wide (in full frame terms) to medium length telephoto would require very good glass to do a decent job.

If there is money to be made I am sure that Canon will release something similar, how it would compare is a different question altogether

I'm not so bothered about the long end, there just doesn't seem to be many lenses starting at 18mm or thereabouts - most are 24 or 28mm which isn't wide enough with the crop factor. Something along the lines of 18-85 or 18-105 would be ideal, and would be just about short enough to use reasonable glass I would think?

From all accounts over at Nikonians, this lens makes the 18-70mm obsolete (assuming you can afford the extra £ and have the need for it).

It would appear that is is at least equal to the 18-70 in that range and has the added advantage of a longer range and VR.

Some of the images I have seen so far have been stunning.

Just wish there were more available in the UK.. I've had mine on order since November (and even paid for it in December, when I got the D200!)

I personally wouldn't buy something with this kind of range, for the simple reason that (to my mind, anyway) there must be some compromise in image quality to achieve it. Otherwise there would be no 17-35mm lenses or 80-200mm lenses or anything in-between, as the new lens would render them obsolete.

I would (and do) always go for the (optically) best and fastest lenses I could afford, even if that meant I had to carry a couple more than if I'd bought one with a huge range on it.

Whilst I understand your POV, you should also realise that the market of people this lens is aimed at are NOT professionals so therefore often have to compromise.

If I was going on holiday and had to travel relatively lightly, this lens would probably be top of my list due to the compact size and the good range.

Don't knock it until you've tried it!

Well if you get anywhere near the discount from onestop that they were offering on a 12-24mm Nikon (£200 less than UK), then HK it is

Thanks for keeping us posted on these Dave - seriously having to think about a new 'every-day' lens now I no longer have my 18 - 70mm Kit !?!

Looks like it has to be a contender ... if I can get hold of one ! In the meantime ... ?
