Ive been using both my SB800s ok to a point up to yesterday both on and off camera however last night due to obviously operator error i had a problem for some reson unknown it started emmitting 3 preflashes before the shutter activating and the think firing, now unfortunately my manual and my other book on the sb800 and the CLS book i have are both in storage in a box as ive just had the builders in for 2 months its obviously me and ive done something or my wife has ................well i blame her for most things so why not this. after all it was her been photographed
Any suggestions ive gone throu the menu on the other one and cant see anything obvious mind that was on four glasses of wine last night
If someone could point me in the right direction i would be most gratefull

Re: Sb800 help

This any help?....

From the SB-800 manual -- "...The SB-800 fires a series of imperceptible Monitor Preflashes just before the flash fires to obtain information on the subject in these cases:
(1) when the SB-800 is used with cameras compatible with CLS, digital SLRs
not compatible with CLS, cameras in Group I with a CPU lens, and
COOLPIX cameras compatible with i-TTL, and flash mode is set to TTL
auto flash, and (2) when the SB-800 is used with cameras compatible with CLS with a CPU lens, and the flash mode is set to Auto Aperture flash.
Monitor Preflashes are fired instantaneously and cannot be differentiated from the main flash, but H appears on the LCD panel (using a single flash unit).
However, for cameras in Group I, Monitor Preflashes are not fired when the
SB-800’s flash head is adjusted to other than the horizontal/front or down to –7° position, or the camera’s flash sync mode is set to Rear-curtain sync, even when H appears on the LCD panel.

Either that, or you have "Red-Eye Reduction" set in the camera somewhere..............

Something else I found as "Advice", that may give clues as to how set and cancel pre-flash....
Quote:
Set your function button to pre flash. Push it, the pre flash will fire to meter the lights, it will also set off your strobes. Now it will hold the settings for you, no more pre flash. Your flash will fire normally now. If you have to adjust, push the function button again to cancel.
Let us know if that makes any sense.........or helps......

Finally, if you want the whole instructions manual as a "PDF" document, this link will download it for you (It views here as a page in Firefox as I have the adobe plug in, not sure if it will in other browsers though?.....)
Link, as ever, checked as "OK" with Norton, it is part of the official Nikon (USA) website.
