Second hand lens sources

I need to replace my kit (stolen along with my vehicle). Initially it was going to be the 7D but as the 5D Mark II is only around £400 dearer, I'm thinking I could justify that if I could save the differences on the lens by looking at the second hand market. I know there's a board here, and I will use it, but as the nature of these things is, what's on offer at the time, other sources would be useful too.

So, any recommendations? The obvious one's eBay I know, but where I've never used it, I know a couple of people who've had bad experiences on there. I'm just outside Edinburgh if that's relevant. Cheers.

Here are a few:

Ffordes Photographic

T4 Cameras

Camtech Photographic

skearsphoto.com USED LENSES

I have bought from Ffordes, T4 Cameras and Mifsuds, everything was fine, never used the others though.

Re: Second hand lens sources

I replaced my kit lens with a lens from ebay, and i have to say that i have never bought such a good lens at such a bargain price.
I replaced the bog standard 18 - 55mm non is kit lens with the Sigma 20 - 40mm f2.8 it cost me £130 and since then i had to have it repaired just a few months ago tot he tune of £99 and its still well worth the money laid out and more.
so dont completely discount ebay.
in saying that i have bought second hand from here, and mainly from word of mouth, get to know other togs and when one has something for sale the word soon spreads,. but with both the 7d and t he 5d dont compromise on lens quality

there is also cameratix in morningside in edinburgh,

http://www.camerabase.demon.co.uk/

and whilst i wouldnt recommend them for any repairs, i would recomend them for sales.

Re: Second hand lens sources

It does not sound as if you are claiming from an insurance policy. However, though my house contents insurance does cover my camera kit at all risks, it does not give much protection if stolen from a car and I think that this restriction is fairly common (and this includes locked in the boot). I never leave my Camera kit in my car. If I am out on a photoshoot, I take only what I can carry so always take it all with me (except sometime a tripod). Do others ever leave camera kit in a car (apart from a compact in the glove compartment)?

Must admit that the vast bulk of my gear, plenty 2ndhand but new also, comes from eBay, followed by photographic sites and then Warehouse Express and MPB!

Regularly, as I usually take the opportunity to go to the supermarket at the same time - in the boot, so under the flimsy parcel shelf (and no, my insurance is pretty rubbish from the car! )

Yes, also on a pretty regular basis as I take it with me sometimes when I go to work so it has to stay in the car (hidden I hasten to add) until I finish work.

Re: Second hand lens sources

Sorry to hear about your loss.. It really pains me..Recently one of my close friend's Canon 5D with assorted of lenses and flash gun were stolen from his car Plus his friend new Canon 7D with some L lens ( recently purchased ).. But down here we do have insurance facility but their services are not up to mark.. So most if not all do not go for insurance

Re: Second hand lens sources

Ive photographed all my kit inc boxes and paperwork and stored the pics in 3 places . Thankfully so far nobodys decided to "borrow" anything I never leave anything in the car even thou i could under the boot floor of my Audi estate however my wife who usually takes the kitchen sink when we go out anywhere puts her stuff under the floor yet im always concerned someones watching etc.
Our other car which at 16 to 18 mpg and has seen single figures has no underfloor storage so if it gets its monthly outing dont leave anything in there.

Re: Second hand lens sources

I always leave a camera kit in the boot of the car I use most. I put the bag in a Packsafe steel mesh sack which is fixed to one of the anchor points, this would only slow them down for a few minutes I suspect but being right at the back of the sizeable boot it would be fiddly to attack. It is covered by my insurance.

Re: Second hand lens sources

Thanks for the input guys, some good info, and apologies for not thanking you sooner, computer problems kept me out for a bit, it really hasn't been my year.

FionaB, I know Cameratix, I pass it fairly regularly, although I never sussed they had second hand kit. I'll check it out after christmas. A friend of mine just told me he once bought a new lens from them that needed fixing after six months but it would have been a warranty repair so I assume it was done by Sigma.
