Sigma 10-20mm
Hello everybody. This is my first post here and I am in a bit of a quandary regarding a wide angle zoom lens. Camera is a Nikon D80 with its kit Nikon 18-70mm. Have just bought the Nikon 70-300mm VR (not yet delivered) and am now looking for a wide angle zoom for buildings and landscapes. Have been investigating the Sigma 10-20mm EX but read on the Nikonians site that light fall-off was noticeable on this lens. Have had a look at a few examples on this site and Flickr, and some pics seem to show it while others are OK. The alternative is the Nikon 12-24 f/4G but it is much more expensive. Would anyone care to comment? Is the optical quality better from the Nikon lens?
Many thanks in anticipation.

Re: Sigma 10-20mm
Thanks Dabhand16. The shots are very good, esp from Dave, although he does admit he has PSed them. The budget may have to decide this one as well as advice - Onestop Digital have this for £269.99 which seems a bargain at the moment.

Re: Sigma 10-20mm
At the price it is indeed a bargain. You don't see many used ones for sale either - that must say something too.

Re: Sigma 10-20mm
Me too, or me 10 more like. I love the Sigma and I had a 12-24 Nikon. The Nikon doesn't deserve to be called a pro lens. It has marginally better image quality but not enough to outweigh the extra 2mm at the wide end of the Sigma. Even if they were the same price I'd take the Sigma. A certain Thom Hogan came to the same conclusion as me for the same reason.
I am waiting for a Tokina 11-16 to get here and you might want to enter that into your equation. It's sharper than the Nikon, almost as wide as the Sigma and a constant 2.8 aperture. Last edited by VinnyP; 20-06-2008 at 15:19. |
