Sigma 10-20mm

Hello everybody. This is my first post here and I am in a bit of a quandary regarding a wide angle zoom lens. Camera is a Nikon D80 with its kit Nikon 18-70mm. Have just bought the Nikon 70-300mm VR (not yet delivered) and am now looking for a wide angle zoom for buildings and landscapes. Have been investigating the Sigma 10-20mm EX but read on the Nikonians site that light fall-off was noticeable on this lens. Have had a look at a few examples on this site and Flickr, and some pics seem to show it while others are OK. The alternative is the Nikon 12-24 f/4G but it is much more expensive. Would anyone care to comment? Is the optical quality better from the Nikon lens?

Many thanks in anticipation.

Re: Sigma 10-20mm

Welcome to Pixalo Finchmeister

Many members, myself included, have this lens and I've never heard anyone saying they were disappointed with it.

We have some example shots taken with the sigma 10-20 here.

We also have some review posted by members here.

HTH.

Re: Sigma 10-20mm

Thanks Dabhand16. The shots are very good, esp from Dave, although he does admit he has PSed them. The budget may have to decide this one as well as advice - Onestop Digital have this for £269.99 which seems a bargain at the moment.

At the price it is indeed a bargain. You don't see many used ones for sale either - that must say something too.

Re: Sigma 10-20mm

Me too, or me 10 more like. I love the Sigma and I had a 12-24 Nikon. The Nikon doesn't deserve to be called a pro lens. It has marginally better image quality but not enough to outweigh the extra 2mm at the wide end of the Sigma. Even if they were the same price I'd take the Sigma. A certain Thom Hogan came to the same conclusion as me for the same reason.
I am waiting for a Tokina 11-16 to get here and you might want to enter that into your equation. It's sharper than the Nikon, almost as wide as the Sigma and a constant 2.8 aperture.

Re: Sigma 10-20mm

Just a quick note, you can purchase this lens from Jessops online with 12 months interest free credit for £274.00. This will be a UK lens with your 3 years UK warranty. Just quote the codes LENS10.

Just tried LENS10 and its now invalid. Summer25 works but the price is £279.99

Re: Sigma 10-20mm

Thanks everyone. Thought I had it sorted until VinnyP mentioned the Tokina! Have just spent all morning looking at reviews and forums about this lens. The f/2.8 will be useful in dull, miserable english summers and indoors, but it is more expensive. Should I wait for prices to come down or get the Siggy now, or pay £400 for the Tokina now? Will I miss the extra width of the Sigma? Questions, questions! (Rhetorical in the most part but comments welcome!)

Re: Sigma 10-20mm

I do not know how much noise you get from your Nikon camera but can you turn the iso up to compensate for the Sigma vs the Tokina ?? I do not find the narrower lens of the Sigma much of a problem and the cost saving is considerable.

The difference between the 10 mm of the Sigma and the 12 mm for the Nikon is considerable in practice.

If it was down to me I would get the Sigma but then again I already have

Re: Sigma 10-20mm

The DC versions are for APS-C sensor cameras. That includes the 30D. You would get slight vignetting (darkening of the corners of the image) on an APS-H sensor (used in the original 1Ds) and more so on a full-frame sensor such as used in the 1D Mk III.

Having never tried it myself (all my cameras use APS-C sensors) I don't know how bad the vignetting is, nor whether it is present throughout the full range of aperture settings or more apparent at one end or the other. Hopefully someone else can advise on that. I do know that my brother uses some Sigma lenses on his 1Ds so it must be possible to work around.

Re: Sigma 10-20mm

charlie3254, I use the Sigma 10-20mm on my Canon 1D Mark III (1.3 crop), and have been very happy with the results. Great for interiors. It vignettes if you set focal length shorter than 11mm, giving a fairly hard-edged "shadow" in the extreme corners with blue edges.

No problems at all on my Canon 40D, which has the same 1.6 crop as the 30D.
