sigma 10-20mm not sharp, need help.

Hello people, im new to this forum.
I just have a question on the sigma 10-20mm f4 for my sony a200, which i got about a week ago.

A lot of the photos that i have taken with it so far just don't look sharp enough or good enough quality for what it is. As i have heard that this is very sharp lens, is there something in the sensor, or mirror or a component on the inside that is causing this?
Here are some examples.

10mm @f22 1/2 sec. Iso 100

10mm @f16 1/8 sec. iso 100

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Ryan

I'm having the same concerns, I'm sending mine back to Sigma for rectification.

Okay dumb question ....did you shoot these handheld or on a steady tripod? Also I assume you were on solid ground and not on a boat or anything right? Hyper focus would sure help, I think even if you are not using that you should get pretty decent pictures

As mentioned by Orangepeel in the other thread, always use manual focus and, for landscapes, probably set to infinity - the only softish shots I've had (aside from camera shake!) are when I've tried for AF

Both of these shots have been taken with a tripod and a self timer being on decent flat ground.

I don't understand the problem.

How did you focus? A long shot, but was it windy?

For better control of the hyperfocal distance.

Most of us now accept the compromises that auto systems impose on us, and we work with what the equipment will do or use work-arounds in PP, HDR, or maybe bracketing the exposures to minimise/eliminate the errors.

Manual exposure will be able to beat auto in the majority of cases, but using manual will take a lot longer. Similarly, manual focus will provide the best depth of field control at the expense of time. Modern lenses tend not to have the markings that make it fairly easy to set up shots for maximum or specific depth of field.

Take it back if you can.

Sigma is known for poor quality control. From your two photos I can see that your 10 - 20 is better than mine. They produce a lot of lemons. I'll never buy Sigma again.

Re: sigma 10-20mm not sharp, need help.

Well that is a bit over the top to say that Sigma lenses are lemons and aren't producing enough good quality lenses.

I think that if you're completely mastering the AF system, you're photo's will be a lot better. If that doesn't help, then I'd say it's the lens.

And I'm sure one that knows the frustration of oof photo's. I've had many, but I don't master the AF system as yet I'm still learning.
