Hi dab_20 and welcome to Pixalo. Sorry I've cut the img tags but all three images were over our limits of 1000pixels on the longest side and/or 300 kb max file size. If you would like to resize and maybe have a look at our http://www.pixalo.com/community/site...les-12062.html . Thanks for understanding

Re: Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro f/2.8 - Example / Sample shots / photos

Hello,
I am new to photography and this forum.
Great shots!!!!

This is the kind of photography that I am interested in.

A quick question if I may:
I am buying a Nikon D90 and I was hoping to get the Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro lense with it.
Because of budget reasons, can I use the Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro for regular day to day photo shots as well or do I really need to get a general purpose lense like the Sigma AF 18-200mm?

I was hoping to get away with buying just ONE lens for now, but I do want to be able to do Macro work as well.

Re: Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro f/2.8 - Example / Sample shots / photos

You can certainly use the 105mm for day to day shots, it just means you'll have to use your legs instead of zooming. However, for a general purpose lens the 18-200 will be a better starter.

Re: Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro f/2.8 - Example / Sample shots / photos

I was close, minmum focusing distance most likely which, IIRC was about a foot. But remember that is from the "film" plane rather than the end of the lens which, in the case of the Sigma is like a an echnida's nose when it's at minimum. That, better AF and VR were why I switched the Nikon, optically nothing in it.

All lovely images shot by 105mm macro! Loved them lots! :-)

I recently bought Sigma 105mm f/2.8.
Can anyone explain me the feature of Limit/Full switch which is there on the lens?
Thanks.

Re: Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro f/2.8 - Example / Sample shots / photos

It's so the lens doesn't have to 'hunt' for focus from 40cm to infinity but can be restricted in it's attempt to focus. The autofocus isn't the fastest on the Sigma although it's common practice to put a limiter on lenses to hasten autofocus - it cuts out the autofocus at near distances

Welcome to Pixalo abhija

I've not got this lens, but I suspect that it is a focus limiter. Full will allow the full focus range to be used. The limit position will probably focus between 2.5 metres and infinity. This will give faster focusing.

Edit: Mark beat me to it!

Thanks for prompt reply.

Some say better! I use both and find them equal in image quality but the handling's different as the 150mm uses internal focussing, has a tripod collar (wonderful for tripoded shots and rapid landscape/portrait changes) and HSM so it's not as clunky as the 105mm. However, as it's HSM, when using MF it's more fiddly to focus - whereas the 105mm is very fast (in MF - AF is slow but I rarely use it).

Personally, I prefer the 105mm - but who knows what I'll think when the 150mm OS is released in the New Year - should be very good as Canon have shown that you can stabilise macros with their 100mm IS (albeit only 2 stops - 4 stops at normal focal distances) and I'd expect equal results from the Sigma
