Sigma 70-200 mm f/2.8

I've just joined the forum, so hello everyone out there reading this first thread of mine.

I have just upgraded to a Canon 40d from the 400d. Most of my photos are inside at Bowling clubs (not 10 pin types) in available light and I want to get in a bit closer to the 'action' (seriously).
I have in mind buying either the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 or the Canon 70-200mm f4 non-IS version.

There's probably been lots said about the comparative worths of these lenses before but I'd be most grateful for any assistance in helping me make an informed choice.

Re: Sigma 70-200 mm f/2.8

Welcome to Pixalo Moorcroft

We have some example shots taken with the Sigma 70-200 here.

As yet, there are no examples with the Canon, but I'm sure some members have this lens and will be able to tell you about it, and maybe point to some shots taken with it.

Re: Sigma 70-200 mm f/2.8

Thanks for the pics Dabhand 16. The quality of the lens is good no question about that.

There are, as I see it, pros and cons between the two lenses . For indoor usage the Sigma 70-200 mm f/2.8 EX DG APO Macro has the extra stop of aperture but is a shade heavier and is a bit more costly. On the other hand the Canon 70-200mm f/4L USM is lighter, cheaper and maybe slightly more reliable in build quality terms. Does the benefit of the one stop faster lens balance against the problem at least one forumite seems to have had with the Sigma or was he just unlucky?

Check out some of Whipspeed's shots, particularly the cycling ones. I'm sure she has this Canon lens.

Her gallery is here.

Dabhand 16

I looked earlier on other threads about the Canon 70-200mm and read some of Whipspeeds threads. I think she did have the f/4L USM version but has since upgraded to the faster f/2.8 L with IS.

Welcome to Pixalo

Both lenses are excellent. Re the Canon lens look here :- Pixalo Photographic Equipment Reviews - EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM - , then take a look at "Steves" Gallery to see what you can achieve with that lens

If you are talking about the Sigma, One-Stop price is 434. Not seen it cheaper.

Re: Sigma 70-200 mm f/2.8

Well, after deliberation and considering all the pros and cons, I decided on the Canon 70-200 f/4L usm. It was a bit cheaper, a bit smaller and lighter. It is an L lens and reckoned to be the best value one, too.

I just hope it will be up to the task at the Indoor Bowls scene. My dosh has been sent to a Canon dealer off Ebay and I'm promised a 40.00 cashback, too. With a Hoya UV filter the total cost is 379.99 with the Canon cashback to come off later makes 339.99.
