sigma 70-300 apo macro fault

not sure if this is the right place to put this but i am getting very frustrated with this lens i bought from that auction site.
i am not asking weather i should apportion blame on the seller but more to the point could anyone shed any light on a big problem with it.
it is the non dg version, and i got it for my D90. the lens does not auto focus most of the time, the camera does try to do something but seems to be stuck, occasionally it does move. on taking the lens off and moving the focus ring manually it seems tight and jerky and makes a noise. i have tried a couple of shots on manual focus and even then when the camera says it is in focus the shots are awful.
i did do a lot of research on the lens before buying and for a budget zoom, most say that apart from being soft at maximum zoom the quality is quite good. does this lens have any known faults or is there something likely to be terminal with it.
thanks in advance for any info.

I was told once that some Sigma lenses need to be re-chipped for modern cameras, perhaps this is the problem, but really you can't beat manual focusing for good macro shots! there can be a focus problem on some of the very older Sigma's why not send Sigma a email and see what they have to say.

thanks for the reply, i did read that there were problems with Canon and chipping but not with Nikon, it wasnt just macro shots that were the problem, it was right through the range... and yes, will give sigma a try, didnt think of that being an older lens..

If in manual focus it's stiff and jerky it's whats technically known as knackered.

Stand for no nonsense and send it back.

.. nice one chris, that was my initial assumption but as you can imagine he is denying any problem so a case has been opened
