Re: Sigma 70mm macro

I guess that what you are asking is does the lens have a built in focus motor. Sigma used to have a list of lenses that will AF on Nikon cameras that don't have a focus motor, but since they have revamped their web site it seems to have been dropped. Sigma lenses with focus motors always used to have a USM designation in their title.

I found this on the Sigma USA website on the 70mm f2.8 macro page

Quote:
* Nikon Mount: NO built in motor lens: NOT compatible with D40, D40x, D60, D3000, D5000
70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro | Sigma Corporation of America

I don't do much macro, but have found that I don't use auto focus very much. It is usually easier to focus manually or by moving either the camera or the subject back and forth. One other thing to consider is that at 70mm your working distance will be quite small and you will find that a lens of 100/105mm would give you a bit more space between your front element and the subject.

It is often said that a lens is for life where a camera body is likely to be upgraded many times within the life of your lenses. I don't know how long you have had your D5100, but it is very probable that you will find the limitations of an entry level camera fairly quickly and will want to upgrade, so when choosing you lenses - especially a macro lens, maybe you should not be concentrating on this one element of the specification.

Re: Sigma 70mm macro

Ok thanks for that graham. And yeah I have found the limits of my camera and am currently looking to upgrade to a d7000. However both of these cameras have crop sensors and therefore when using a 70 mm lens the actual focal distance produced is 105 mm. But thanks anyway
I will keep a lookout for anything that will work with my camera

These lenses are still usable on your camera - it is just the autofocus that will not work. If you went for a 100/105mm lens it will effectively be a 155mm-ish lens so giving you around 1/3 more working space.

If you are going to upgrade soon I don't think that the focus issue is worth bothering about for the time you have left with the D5100. I'm pretty sure that the D7000 will autofocus these lenses from the camera body.
