Sigma DC lens and a teleconverter?

Hello everyone.

I just got given a Sigma DC OS HSM 50-200mm lens to fit on my Canon 550D. Cant turn down a freebie!

Now I was wondering if it is possible to put a teleconverter in-front of it? I know I would loose the Auto focus but as I would only use the teleconverter when in a static wildlife situation (bird hut at the local reserve etc) I didn't think this would be too much of an issue.

Or do they just not work? I am quite new to all of this so please don't be too harsh on me if I have completely miss-understood what is possible.

Basically I am cheap, have been given this lens and was wondering if I could squeeze a bit more length out of it?

Thanks for any help!

Welcome to Pixalo Logorocks

I think I'm right in saying that you cannot use a TC with this lens.

In this Sigma compatibility chart, it says

Quote:
USABLE LENSES AND COMNBINATIONS

Sigma APO Tele Converter 1.4x and 2x are dedicated to Tele Converter lenses, which should be used with only listed lenses.
Which I take to mean that if the lens is not on the chart, it is not compatible with teleconverters.

Re: Sigma DC lens and a teleconverter?

Hi Dabhand16. Thanks for the warm welcome.

I also noticed this on the sigma website. I took it as the sigma bunch saying their teleconverters would only work with those specific lenses. So thanks for saying otherwise.

So what you are suggesting is that the list is actually talking about sigma lenses that are compatible with all teleconverters and not what specific sigma lenses are compatible with their own teleconverters? (I think I may have just repeated myself, it's been a long weekend!)

Any idea if there could be some third party work around? Just I know if I can fudge some results and enjoy the photography experience then I will save and buy a decent prime and teleconverter combo.

Or am I just going to have to take the jump?

Thanks for your help again

I thought that was what I said

It is to do with the rear elements of the lens coming into contact with the front lens of the TC - not a good thing. You can always try one, but it just might damage either or both. I'm sure that the brand of the TC is not relevant.

Re: Sigma DC lens and a teleconverter?

I use the Kenko pro300 1.4x TC and, as it has nothing projecting into the lens (glass is flush with leading edge of TC), it'll fit many of the lenses that the are quoted as being incompatible with their own TCs (plus the Kenko pro300 is the equal of the Canon type II 1.4x TC)

Easy enough to check: if the lens has anything projecting, passing back from the lens mount, the Kenko won't fit

Re: Sigma DC lens and a teleconverter?

Hello Markulous, and thank you for the tip!

The Sigma arrives today so will check the mount for anything projecting out the rear-end!

Kenko pro300 1.4x TC is bookmarked so fingers crossed.

Thanks again.
