Sigma or Kenco teleconverter?

Am looking to improve my quality on the long end of my 100-400mm canon. I am stuck between the sigma and the kenco 2X, does anybody use a similar lens and have quality feedback or maybe which one is better? I don't mind manual focus, I just want something better then the promaster spectrum 7 that I use now.

Re: Sigma or Kenco teleconverter?

Don't know about the Sigma, but I had a Kenco Pro300 1.4x which was very good. Of course neither will give AF on the 100-400.

Re: Sigma or Kenco teleconverter?

I too would recommend the Kenko PRO 300 1.4x - I've yet to find a lens on which it won't fit, unlike both the Sigma and Canon

Re: Sigma or Kenco teleconverter?

The Kenko Pro DG 1.4x one I have makes all my pictures slightly soft with my 100-400L.

Great but I'd love to see some tests with other makes.

My 100-400 Auto focuses on the the Kenko but you do have to dso a dodge to get it to work

I had the Canon and found no discernible difference in quality - hence getting rid of it in favour of the Kenko

Re: Sigma or Kenco teleconverter?

With a running score of;
Kenco 2
Sigma 0
? 1
When looking around by my lonesome, I was leaning towards the sigma. Any more for the score ?

Haven't bought a converter yet, I guess I can make a good guess or guess and guess again.

Re: Sigma or Kenco teleconverter?

I use the Kenko x1.4 on my pro Nikon lenses and it peforms superbly. I can't tell the difference optically between it and the twice as expensive Nikon version.

Re: Sigma or Kenco teleconverter?

I have a canon 1.4X and it works great. My general use is with the 100-400mm. I almost bought the canon 2X today as I have been convinced it would improve the long end on this lens. It seems to have been improved and has better glass with 7 elements in 5 groups. I didn't because I sometimes like the ablitiy to use on a wider range of lenses. You can't have it all,. It would be nice to have a prime long range lens with the quality right out there.

I agree, I have both and whilst the Nikon is a smidge better it's not worth the extra. However the 2X is not the same story, the Nikon is noticably better but all 2x convertors are break glass in case of emergency TBH.

Re: Sigma or Kenco teleconverter?

Still haven't paid out for any converter yet. Thanks for all the information and thoughts. I didn't know 2x were easy to break, I guess I have been lucky and haven't broken any camera accessories yet. Dented caps and scraped the paint off the camera body. Looking back I might pick up the canon 2X to use on the 100-400mm only. I've been playing with high speed shooting so the 2X is nowhere to be seen.

Re: Sigma or Kenco teleconverter?

By Break glass in case of emergency I just meant they are all have a pretty big impact on image quality and performance. I try to avoid them if at all possible.

OK, makes sense. I had my 0ld 2X on my 85mm yesterday and was dropping out pictures at 1/2000 in shutter mode with an f stop of 1.2 to 2.5 showing up. In the shadows I had auto ISO pick up between 100 and 250. seems to work good (shooting birds in flight),but I was reminded of another problem with this 2X,,,color fringe. I take it off and it goes away. I don't hear alot about color fringe showing up with the other 2x's. I will always want a 2x for some shooting with better results in good light. When the labor problems are gone away I will go ahead and pan out some moola.
