speedlite??

can someone recommend me a decent but not so expensive flash?
i own a canon 40D and have read that they work perfectly with the Canon Speedlite 580EX II, but does anybody have any experience with any other flash? i dont want to spend a fortune but want a decent one that will work fine as it would be the first time i have looked at using anything other than pop up...

thanks
aidey

Re: speedlite??

i Have a Sunpak PZ42X that does everything I need. It has Ettl auto zoom built in and can be picked up for about half the cost or less than the 580EX

Re: speedlite??

ve got the lesser version, speedlite 430EX a little bit cheaper and it works fine. The 580 EX is more powerful by how much I'm not sure, also it can remotely fire other flashes which would be useful to some togs.

Re: speedlite??

I also have the Speedlite 430EX-II and an older 550EX. The 430 is smaller and has a faster recycle time, but isn't quite as powerful which can make a difference especially for bounce flash.

The 550EX works perfectly with the latest cameras and you may be able to find one at a good price on Ebay.

Re: speedlite??

If the flash is fitted on the camera then it communicates directly. Most Sigma, Sunpak and other non Canon flashes must be purchased in the correct flavour Ie:- Canon, Nikon, Olympus etc.

For off camera flash you can either buy a simple wireless setup for a few pounds that doesn't talk to the camera or go to the other end of the scale and buy expensive kit that keeps the ettl connection over a wireless connection.

Re: speedlite??

You wouldn't need a transmitter for any of them. They fit on the hotshoe on top of your camera. If you look at the top of your 40d you will see around the main big pad in the shoe a number of smaller pads, these pads are what connects the brain of the flash to the electronics in the camera.

Whatever make you buy must be Canon compatible and also ETTL2 and not just ETTL.

As above I have a Sunpak PZ42X which was 125 off ebay, it slides on top of the camera and is controlled by the camera's computer. I do have basic wireless adaptors but they are in no way necessary.

Re: speedlite??

I have an almost identical set and they cost the same kind of money.

The only thing we have found is that they don't seem to like the older higher trigger voltage guns. I use my Sunpak on one and it works okay. If your looking for cheap flashes to use with them you may or may not hit lucky

Re: speedlite??

Have you the MKII's ?, as I found the MKI played up with 580EX. Also find they are temperamental when too close to transmitter.
