Standing a lens on a desk

I have a question that may make me look silly, but that's never stopped me before. It concerns putting lens down on a hard surface. I was giving mine a quick checkover after being out the other day. I laid my camera body and lens on my desk. All lens had caps on both ends, but it suddenly occurred to me, is sitting them down on the connecting end preferable to the front end, in this situation?

Re: Standing a lens on a desk

Depending on the size of the lens I would think that the filter end is probably better if you must stand them upright. Standing then on the end with the mount seems wrong as the mount is relatively narrow and I would have thought the lens would have been top heavy unless it is very short.

Why not put them sideways and ensure that they cannot roll off the table. That seems the safest to me

Re: Standing a lens on a desk

I usually will take a lens or camera out of a bag to clean them so always put them back in the bag.

Same for me. A lens is either on the camera or in my bag.

I understand what you're saying, I just like to clean my gear after I've been out, including sometimes, but not always, my bag. I guess I'll maybe just lay them on my bed while the bag's being done.
