Tamron 28-200mm AF Aspherical LD Lens for Nikon 1:3.8-5.6

Just getting back into SLR photography and have a few questions. A used Nikon D40 in here with a few lenses adapters. Have 3 C mount lenses that aren't working out with this arrangement, will not focus. They are good lenses and allowed me to take some very decent pics. Could use a little help on this if any is available.
Am looking at this used lenses ( in the title ) and would appreciate any info on using it with the D40. Wallet is pretty thin so I don't have a bundle of choices. If this lens is a good choice for an all around lens, including some macro, then I will get it.
Other than loosing some or all of the adjustments, is it a good idea to use adapters for say Cannon, Pentax, etc. lenses. Might have to try the lottery, see if a good ticket is available.
Hope this post is in the right forum. Thanks

Re: Tamron 28-200mm AF Aspherical LD Lens for Nikon 1:3.8-5.6

The Nikon has an F mount and pretty much any Nikon or third party Nikon mount lens will fit OK. Adaptors can allow the use of other lens mounts, but there could be image quality issues and maybe focal length variations that could affect the metering.

You need to get lenses with built-in focus motors unless you don't mind manual focus. Nikon lenses with built-in motors are designated AF-S, Sigma HSM and I think Tamron use USD or Di. Check before you buy!

With regard to the focal length, 28-300 will effectively become 42-450mm, so that will be good for sport and wildlife, but not so good for closer work. Also using the long end will be difficult until you get to know what you are doing. A zoom range starting at 18mm is better for general purpose work and most makers produce lenses with an 18-200mm zoom range. Some do 18-250 or 18-270 too, but these are dearer.

Macro can only be properly done with a dedicated macro lens, but you can use a normal lens to get close-up shots - i've done this mysel - for crop, but this will require the images to be 100% good and will often result in a loss of sharpness.

Lets see what the others think.

Thanks, this is going to be an interesting quest. Having to study again is not my idea of enjoyment but with the end results I am sure all will be good. Will post some pics when I can." tenchy" is the one who got me interested and want to thank him again. Stay warm and healthy.
