Re: tamron 28-300 vc
I know someone with a Tamron 28-300 Di (no VC or medals of any kind) and he is extremely pleased with it. The only downside is that 28mm is not really wide-angle on an APS-C camera.

Re: tamron 28-300 vc
I'll second silkstone. 28mm just doesn't cut it for wide angle on a crop sensor. I considered the 28-300, but ended up not getting it specifically for that reason.
Fortunately for me I spent the money on a 28-75mm f/2.8 instead =) Just to throw ideas in the mix, have you considered maybe an 18-200mm lens? I know Sigma, Nikon, and Tamron all produce one. |

Re: tamron 28-300 vc
Not sure if I've mentioned the Tamron 18-200 somewhere else, but anyway I bought it a couple of years ago as a 'travel' lens, but it's also very useful for any situation where you don't want to do a lot of lens swapping - e.g. in dusty or windy conditions.
It isn't the sharpest lens in the world, but is quite adequate if you don't use it wide open. Since the maximum aperture at 200mm is f/6.3, that means you really have to treat it as an f/8 or f/11 lens - fine for reasonable light or high ISO, but perhaps a bit limited in other situations. Mind you, with the performance of the latest cameras at ISO 3200 and above, maybe that doesn't matter as much as it did. On the plus side, the Tamron 18-200 is very light and compact (although the barrel extends when zooming), and focus is fairly quick if a little noisy. The quoted focal length range is a bit optimistic - mine is more like 17-175. Tamron now make an 18-250 but I've not tried that to compare. |
