Smile Tamron 300/5.6 Adaptall MF evaluation

I purchased this MF lense on Ebay several months ago and just got around to evaluating. For $61, including shipping it does a pretty reasonable job.
Evaluation is here:

http://www.pbase.com/knickles/tam300

Very sensitive to vibration and mirror lockup is recommended for shutter speeds less than 1/30 when on a tripod.

Hi, have you tested this lense with bird s or little animals? Are you pleased with it?

I'm asking because I know someone is selling it ...
I have a Sigma 70-300 Apo macro I was looking for a 300mm that was better than my sigma

I doubt that you will get a reply as this thread is over a year old and nickles has not been active here since.

Maybe someone else can offer some advice though...

Re: Tamron 300/5.6 Adaptall MF evaluation

Dan, ordinarily I would say a 300mm prime will be better than a zoom but not in this case, stick to what you've got in my opinion.

The Tamron 300mm f5.6 manual focus lens is not great, I have used it and it is was not a good experience. The lens is very soft at wide end (f5.6) and you're going to struggle to get a lot of use if you have to use it at f11/16 most of the time.

The 300mm end of the lens you have got is very capable and you will not see an advantage with this particular prime lens. Save your money for something better.

Cheers,
Rob

What about the 300mm Sigma F4? I tried one on my 20D and wide open it was pretty sharp. Downside was it gave the infamous err99 stopped down. Not sure if Sigma can rechip it to work either.
