tamron 55-200

can anybody tell me if this lens is any good?
tamron 55-200 f4-5.6 di II ld.

i have read a few reviews and it seems to be pretty good other than its all plastic and the AF struggles a little bit in low light.

im looking at it as the price is very cheap like 60 and if its any good i may be able to afford another lens aswell

thanks for your help

Re: tamron 55-200

Well in terms of aperture, f/4 at 55mm isn't great, and 5.6 and 200mm isn't good really at all except for in very bright conditions. The sad thing is with lenses, there's usually a reason they're expensive or cheap (bar the nifty fifty, which is cheap due to its history of mass production). Not sure I'd go for it if I were you, what other lenses have you got?

Don't know this lens at all, but I'd try to put all of my money in one better lens.

Re: tamron 55-200

THe 70-300 is a really good lens for the price, go for the APO version though, as it's better and not much more (MARK!!! ). It's produced some of my favourite shots, and has a really nice bokeh to it. I'd definitely look at that. Incidentally, I also have the Tamron 90mm, which has done me great service and opened up a whole new world of macro to me, it's great:
SEE here for example Tamron shot that I like

I'd agree with the Sigma 70-300 APO

Silkstone is a fan of the Tamron 18-200 and has posted some example shots here.

Re: tamron 55-200

I've got the Sigma 70-300 APO, its a good lens, pretty good on close ups as well. I got mine from One Stop digital at about 30.00 cheaper than the cheapest uk supplier inclusive of postage but that was some months ago.

Re: tamron 55-200

Sorry guys - I'm a bit behind at the moment. I'd go for the Sigma 70-300 APO (as suggested) if you want an affordable tele-zoom. I'm a fan of the Tamron 18-200 (more so since I read the review of the new Canon 18-200), but that's a different beast - a very useful, small and lightweight all-in-one lens for when you want to travel light or not swap lenses.
