Tamron SP 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di VC USD - Has anyone used it yet?

Hi all,

Has anyone got one of these?
Tamron SP 70-300mm f4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens - Canon AF - Jessops

I've narrowed my new telephoto choice down to this OR the Canon 70-200 F4L (without IS) and I cannot decide

Tamron is longer, has VC and is £150 cheaper than the Canon, but something is still drawing me to the Canon, but it is more expensive and right on the top end of my budget.

I do a lot of hand held stuff and I like taking pictures of animals and garden birds (badly) so the extra range could be useful.

What do you reckon?

Cheers all,

Noel

You could pick up a used 70-200 f4 for the same money and IQ and build are no comparison, the canon is streets ahead. I am considering the 70-200 myself. At the moment I have this

Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens - Jessops

and I love it the IQ is on a par with the 70-200 at equivalent focal lengths (some reviews will tell you otherwise but unless you are testing scientifically you wont notice it) It is definitely not as sharp from 200 to 300 but not dramatically so and unless you print huge its of little relevance. The extra 100mm and IS is I think a worthy trade off. Unfortunately if you are a polariser or grad filter user then the biggest drawback would be the rotating front element on the Canon 70-300 when focusing. For handholding its probably the better bet and for £50 more I would rather have the Canon than the Tammy.

Since my initial post I have done a bit of digging and I have to say the Tammy gets very favourable reviews so I guess the water just got muddier Decisions Decisions. Best bet is to go to Jessops take your body along and try them out. Good Luck.

I've got the older non VC version which I occasionally use on a D300s & D40. It seems to do ok for a cheaper lens and I've had some good results from it but I would swop it for a Nikon 70-200mm F2.8 in a heartbeat .

There are some examples in my gallery, from memory: The seagull, peacock, lemur and monkey.

You can still buy the Nikkor 80-200 f2.8 for under £800 new and used for around £550.

The AF-S 80-200 f2.8 is a rare beast, but there are some on e-bay now.
