I have just taken delivery of this lens bought on e-bay for 175 I have to take some portrait shots at the weekend and have read that this lens will be allright to use what do you think?

Brilliant lens, regardless of which model version you picked up. I own two different versions. Keep in mind that it's 90mm on a full frame camera and a bit longer (144mm) on others. With it's fast f/2.8 wide open aperture and extremely sharp focus at all apertures, I've also used it with multipliers and have gotten some great telephoto shots.
