Tele converter Olympus

Hi everyone. I am very new to photography so please excuse my lack of knowledge.

I have recently bought an Olympus SP 590UZ. My main hobby is photographing birds and wildlife. I am still learning, as I am so not technically minded, but have been very pleased with some of my results. I have been trying to find a Teleconverter lens which will increase my zoom further and I have found out that I seem to require a TCON 17. Here is my problem.

Sometimes I have read that I need a TCON17N, other times a TCON17x and other times a plain old TCON17. I do have an adapter CLA-11, and I have seen TCON17X's online but I do not know if there are variations amongst these and which one I need. Because mine is an older model I don't even know if I can get one as most seem to be compatible with the newer Olympus models.

Please if anyone can help my confused mind. I don't want to get the wrong one and I'm going on my holidays in a few weeks and hoped to get some nice photos.

Welcome to Pixalo Delilah

I'm not that familiar with Olympus cameras, but I think that your model is what is known as a bridge camera. If I am right, you will not be able to use a teleconverter with it as the lens on the camera cannot be removed.

Having said that I'm also sure that you have the equivalent of a very long lens in the camera anyway - in excess of 650mm and if you want to go longer you will need a different camera, a minimum of a 600mm lens and a very stable tripod. Then you will be able to use a teleconverter if necessary.

Re: Tele converter Olympus

Thanks Graham, yes it is a bridge camera. It seems to be there is one available but it has to be used with an adapter which I have.

Olympus SP-590UZ teleconverter and adapter

I just can't make out the lens on this picture clearly enough to see if it says X or not and there has been a bit of inconsistency on other sites so I'm not sure. The zoom on this is very good, I just wanted to experiment to see if I could get even better. I know eventually I will have to upgrade to something which can give me more flexibility, some cameras just seem so confusing and I have a lot of learning to do.

Re: Tele converter Olympus

This is showing my ignorance of Olympus products. Most teleconverters fit in between the lens and the camera body, where this one seems to fit onto the front of the lens.

The most common ways of fitting lenses in front of the camera lens use the filter screw thread, a bayonet fitting or friction fit. The easiest way would be if you could visit an Olympus dealer to see if your camera can accept any of the converters or just one. You can try them on your camera. If you can't visit a dealer perhaps a telephone call will suffice.

The one in the link you have posted looks like a 17x to me. I enlarged the image by zooming my browser. Maybe someone elas could confirm this. Also it seems that the CLA 11 is the adaptor that will allow the lens to fit onto your lens.

Re: Tele converter Olympus

Hi Delilah,, my first digital for stills was a C5050Z,,then later on I took in the same camera you have. The Oly has threads on the body around the inner edge where the lense extends when turned on. I had the adapter and still use it on the C5050Z. The adapter is a tube Cover threaded on the end that holds a number of lense accessories. I had the same problem but they all fit on the adapter and worked very well. That is the 10 or so lenses that you can choose from. I had to get step up ring to use other things. You should have a 43mm thread on the end of your adapter. If your tele. Has a 43mm it will work. Mine does.
