Telephoto and Wide lens

While searching for a nikkon lens I came across a telephoto and wide lens in Ebay India.

Just wanted to get feedback from you all regarding the item

EBAY_INDIA_TELEPHOTO

How is this lens different from other lens and can I take moon photo with this??

What are the advantages of buying this lens?

Re: Telephoto and Wide lens

Generally I'd avoid these kind of things.

Advantages:
  • Cheap

Disadvantages:
  • Only screw into 52mm thread lenses
  • Nothing like the optical quality of an actual Nikon tele/wide lens
  • Only 2x magnification on the tele end

I appreciate that the good wides and teles are expensive but Nikon make some of the best lenses out there, particularly at the wide end so it seems silly to spend money on something like this instead - really these things are for attaching to video cameras, at least thats the only time I've seen them used. Thinking long term, you'll use these for a while but its inevitable you'll move onto a higher quality lens so if I were you I'd use the money you were going to spend on those as the start of a fund for something more capable.

I'm sure you could take a pic of the moon with it but if you only have say a 50mm lens, it's not going to make the moon dramatically larger in your photographs.

There's no harm in getting it and trying if you can easily afford it but if it was me, I would not consider it.

Re: Telephoto and Wide lens

Thanks MB for your suggestion.

In fact I was also wondering how tele photo lens comes so cheap???

Could you give me some reference of Nikon lens for taking Moon photo?

Please keep the budget in mind.

Re: Telephoto and Wide lens

For decent Moon shots you need a minimum of 400mm, and/or a teleconverter too. Nikkor lenses in this focal length are very expensive.

Having said that, I'm talking about the Moon we see in the UK. Sometimes there is the optical illusion that the Moon is bigger, and in India you might have a different perspective.

If you search in both the forums and the gallery with the keyword 'moon' you will find plenty of examples of shots, some of which will have EXIF data that will give you the focal length of the lens.

I'll give you this example of a Moonshot taken in the Canery Isles last December with a 200mm lens:

Re: Telephoto and Wide lens

Ok what about a 70-300 nikkor vr. And when you can buy a teleconverter. A 1.4 gives you already a bit extra and doesn't stop it down to much. But preferable a 80-400mm would be ideal. But that lens cost a bit of money though.

With lenses you get what you pay for. The 70-300 is not that expensive and can produce great photo's. You can get them second hand as well.

Can I use a teleconverter on a variable focal lens???

I thought it can be used only with prime ones.

No I was wrong. I read about this yesterday. You can't use the teleconverter on the 70-300 vr.

Re: Telephoto and Wide lens

You can use a Kenko one but it really struggles to AF with the 1.4 and it won't stand a chance with the 2.0. However with a moon photo, provided you have a VERY sturdy tripod you could manual focus and get good results. I have a 70-300 and think it is a real bargain.

Re: Telephoto and Wide lens

Some zoom lenses will accept teleconverters. My Sigma 70-200 f2.8 will accept both the 1.4x and 2x converters. I think it depends on the lens construction.

Re: Telephoto and Wide lens

Graham--

Is it like teleconvertors work with fixed aperature lens and not essentially only with fixed focal lens?

Coz i noticed in various places, where ever they mention a teleconverter, they use it with either a fixed focal or a fixed aperature lens.

Re: Telephoto and Wide lens

Fixed aperture lenses are mirror lenses and might be worth considering as they are smaller and lighter than conventional lenses. Probably cheaper too. However, I don't know what ones are available at the moment, or which ones are worth searching for secondhand.

A 1.4x converter will reduce the effective aperture of your lens by one stop, and a 2x by two stops. This applies no matter what type of lens you have.

There is no rule as to what lenses you can or can't fit a converter to - it all depends on the lens and the converter.

Re: Telephoto and Wide lens

The only restriction is with the Nikon Tcons they have certain tabs that mean they only work with certain lenses. The third party ones can work with most lenses with the exception of a few that will foul on the front element during focusing/zooming. These are usually standard/super zooms. With Nikon you can usually auto focus fine up to about F7.2 F8. if the effective aperture is smaller than that then you are much better off manual focusing.

But would I be able to use a sigma tc on a 70-300 for example? Cause I don't understand exactly what the problem is.

Here is the compatibility chart from the Sigma web site:

Sigma - Lenses - Teleconverters

I could not see the 70-300 listed. The problem is that with some lenses, the rear element of the lens might touch the teleconverter lens either causing damage or preventing them fitting together if the rear element moves when focussing or zooming.
