Testing Nikon D200 at 1600 ISO + 50mm f/1.8 lens

With the light being poor today I thought I would test the Nikon D200 paired with Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens to their limits re light available. Following shot taken at 1600 ISO with lens at f/1.8, giving 1/60 shutter . PS work included smart blur to skin, slight sharpen of eyes & subtle S curve. Light was from window plus wall light. No flash used.

Very nice shot and a beautiful subject! How did you find it for noise?

Left in colour it wasn't too intrusive & only very obvious when you enlarge shot to 100% view in PS. I think for portrait work it can work quite well, especially if throwing the background out of focus.

I tried converting to Mono & then it really did show though. Colour is obviously more forgiving in this area

If I had to shoot at high ISO consistently I would have gone the Canon route....I have discussed this with Steve & seen some of his examples, which shows how well the Canon copes with it. For me though it will be very rare I shoot at this ISO, so other factors kept me on the Nikon route.

How are you finding it out in the field ?

For me it's the one thing that lets it down but maybe I'm being a bit over critical as when I see the final prints they never look as bad as they do on screen. I try not to go above 500 if at all possible hence the 'need' for some faster glass.
