I keep finding different lens names that i've never come across before, ei: Vivitar, Rokinon, etc.. how do I find out the quality of these lenses? Or is it better to stick to the "big names"?

Have a scan over Members reviews of lenses here :- http://www.pixalo.com/reviews/ . In addition use the "search" function on these forums for certain lenses or brands.

Vivitar were reputable in the 80s but now are very much at the budget end, it shows in the pics from their lenses.

There are some good websites out there, Pixalo very much included. As the powers that be dislike links to other sites I can't give you links directly but there's a photo review website with a .de country code, and one run by a brazilian bodybuilder that are both useful
