Thread Size on Tripods

I'm looking at tripods and noticed the thread size. Are all sizes the same? I tried finding out what the thread size is on my Rebel XTI and couldn't. Anyone know what size the Rebel XTI is?

Re: Thread Size on Tripods

The mount in the bottom of the camera is usually 1/4" Whitworth Thread, this is therefore usually found on the head of a tripod.

The tripod head is often held onto the tripod with a 3/8" Whitworth Thread, these two sizes are very common among all camera kit and adaptors from one to the other are readily available.

cheers

Re: Thread Size on Tripods

35mm = 1/4"
Medium format = 3/8"

Usually!

So, yours is the "standard" 1/4" - as are most tripods and quick release plates (tho' some have adapters to take 3/8")

Re: Thread Size on Tripods

Most/all SLRs and compacts are threaded 1/4" UNC. Some larger (medium format and above) cameras are 3/8" UNC.

Some tripods have only a 1/4" screw, but others come with a 3/8" adapter.

EDIT/ There's an echo in 'ere. P.S. UNC and Whitworth are just about identical - easier to get UNC nuts/bolts these days.

Re: Thread Size on Tripods

OK--I understand the 1/4 is the size of the hole in my camera that attaches to the tripod. the 3/8th is the attachment (maybe the quick release plate) that attaches to the tripod. Then you would attach the camera to the quick release plate that has a 1/4 bolt to attach it to---Right? Some of the Bogen tripods I'm looking at have a quick release plate. Some don't and just have the head with a 1/4 or 3/8th head. Now I have the Rebel XTI and I do plan down the line to get a 5D. I gotta say tho---that line is long

Re: Thread Size on Tripods

There's a 1/4" screw going through the quick release plate, and this screws into the camera. The QRP then clips into the tripod head. The head itself is usually threaded 3/8" to screw onto the tripod itself.

Some heads may not have a QRP, and these will just have a 1/4" or 3/8" screw on the head platform.

Screwy or what?
