Tripod Help

HI all,

I have a pretty rubbish cheapy tripod at the moment. I think it would be much improved with a better head. How changeable are the heads?

Can I just take the head off and replace with a better one or is it more complicated than that?

Cheers
Paul

Re: Tripod Help

Hello birthday boy

Heads can have two different thread sizes. The standard 1/4" as on the bottom of your camera is pretty universal, but some will have a 3/8". However, you can get adaptors easily - even from Jessop's!

I prefer a ball head as I find they are much quicker to set, but if you are going to do macro or panoramic work you will probably find a three-way pan/tilt better as you can move the camera in one direction while keeping the other planes locked.

If you consider the pistol grip style, remember that the camera will only go into portrait orientation one way if you have the horizontal type of grip, and the upright ones will take the camera well away from the centre axis of the tripod if it is tilted to portrait orientation.

Re: Tripod Help

yeah, I know about the thread sizes at the bottom. I was more thinking about the attachment of the head to the tripod, not the head to the camera.

I think the actual legs of my tripod or not to bad, just the head thats rubbish and thats what I want to change. Not sure if I can buy a head to fit the legs or if its better just to buy a new tripod..?

Re: Tripod Help

If you are happy with the legs you could just change the head, but check out what is on the market - you might find that a complete tripod/head is not a lot dearer than just the head, unless you are going to go a few steps up the ladder. The Benro and Manfrotto range are well thought of, and I use Velbon.

These might be of help:
