Tripod question, possibly daft

Will a manfrotto head fit a gitzo tripod or vice versa? I mean do they have standard fittings so that you can pick and choose between makes?

They do in the Video world as our ENG cameraman has his own pan+tilt head he uses on Manfrotto sticks.

Never thought to check, but it would make sense (for us) if they did. Manufacturers might be miffed at you using other marque's heads on their legs though...

I've always assumed they will.

My colleague has a gitzo tripod with a kirk ball head.

I think the mount on the legs is a normal screw thread, so you could actually mount the camera direct to it, but you would have no movement. The head just goes in between these two, to allow for movement. Or so I've always thought!
