Upgrading Lens ?

This is all very hypothetical since funds are well drained after Christmas. If I were to upgrade then what would be my best option? I have used the Canon 70-300IS to photograph cyclists and while I have generally been happy I feel that I am missing too many (poor % of keepers) just not sharp enough. Looking through I have noticed that I have only gone over 200mm in a very small percentage.

I was considering the 70-200 f4 L. I have read good comments on here and know that you ,Dave, are impressed by it.

Is it worth the upgrade on my 30D? I am also keeping my eye on second hand prices for 1D(S) II so top class glass may be a good idea.

Again all for the future but thought it a good idea to get some clear ideas now.

Roger

Re: Upgrading Lens ?

From what I've read here the 70-200 f4 is very highly regarded. However, I don't know how it stacks up against the 70-300 IS.

Re: Upgrading Lens ?

IMO the 70-300 IS doesn't lack sharpness, but it isn't the fastest to focus and that may be the problem. The 70-200 should be better but I'd go for the IS version - although for moving subjects that may not help.

Re: Upgrading Lens ?

Thanks Silkstone, I thought that myself but did not want to ramble on in original thread More down to focus speed than IQ. When well focussed 70-300 is great, but fast cyclists? IS turned off for panning anyway.

All I need is someone looking to sell a 70-200 f4 L very cheap.

Re: Upgrading Lens ?

if someone sells me a 100-400mm i may be doing just that

AF speed for sports is grand with the 70-200 f4 L. Almost all of my motorsport shots are taken with it.

This photo was one when the car appeared at the last second before the jump at speeds over the ton.

i've never used the 70-300 so couldn't compare the two but i can only recommend the 70-200.

Re: Upgrading Lens ?

Thanks Steve, seem to remember your recommendation from another thread. Fast focus is the issue and VFM (not a huge amount more than 70-300 in the world of Canon)
