UV Filter Life saver.

When I read about sticking a UV filter on the front of the lens to protect it I though
well OK. Wont hurt.

Took my camera out of the bag today and the filter was shattered. I cannot remember dropping it at all but thank god for the filter. The lens was untouched.

Was worth every penny just to protect the lens.

Yes they can be helpful but I never put my camera/lens in my bag without a lens-cap on.

Nor me Never put a lens in a bag without a lens cap - on or off of the camera. If off the camera a rear cap is essential too.

Filters are not very strong so are liable to break due to pressure if not protected with a lens cap. I guess a resin filter might have a bit more strength, but a glass one is quite fragile.

Re: UV Filter Life saver.

If it is a pinch fit lens cap they can get dislodged - especially if there is a filter on the lens!!!

If you look at the depth of the filter mount to the filter and compare it to the depth from the front of the lens to the front element I bet you will find that the filter has only about half of the depth that the lens has. This means that the two lens cap grips have only around half of the area to grip onto compared to the lens so the cap will not fit as securely.

I've noticed this since I removed the filters from my lenses. I now only use them outdoors and not for studio work which is what I've been doing most of lately.

Chances are that it was the dislodged cap that broke the filter.

Re: UV Filter Life saver.

Good call Graham.

Its in a very padded bag so what ever caused it I would assume had to be
in the bottom of the bag.

I cover a large distance with work and it goes every where with me in the car.

Damage done now. At least lens OK.

Amen.

Might be worth seeing if there is any difference in the depth of the filter mount in different brands and get the one with the deeper mount to enable the cap to grip better. Just make sure that there is no vignetting at the wide angle end with the filter fitted. Ironically, thinner filter mounts are generally favoured especially for wide angle lenses as they will cause vignetting if they are too thick! your lens ought to be OK though.

Also make sure the camera is a very snug fit in the bag as excessive movement won't help.

Re: UV Filter Life saver.

About three years ago I slipped on a wet grass bank I went down one way and the camera flew the other way and landed nose down in the mud. All I had to do with the camera was to unscrew the filter and wash it and a damp cloth cleaned the rest. As for me I was less easily fixed I broke my arm in two places was in hospital for three days for an operation to fit a metal pin in my elbow. So the canon L lens faired better than I did.
