Well pleased

Saturday I got a replacement for my elderly Canon 17 / 40 L.
Replaced it with the new Canon 16 / 35 f4 L IS.
Went to the museum yesterday to try it out..... superb! Pin sharp, great contrast colour and detail. I deliberately tried to "beat" it with extremes of contrast and flare but it coped very well, it also did very well on interior shots, distortion was good for 16mm and DXO sorted it in post processing.
It even comes with a hood and soft leather pouch.
The only thing I am still trying to work out is that with a C. pol (Hoya pro 1 digital) filter, with very bright white clouds it occasionally looked like there was a squashed insect in frame at the extreme edges of the cloud, ( very dark red to black), removing the filter cured the effect.
So all in all, well pleased.

Well done Charles. Amuses me to see

I can never get my head around Canon not routinely supplying a lens hood.

Re: Well pleased

Glad to hear the new toy is going well.

Did the "insect" appear on the resulting image file or just through the lens ?

Re: Well pleased

Hi Chris, no it just appeared on the file, it was like when the whites are blown out looking at the rear screen but instead of being white they were red / black. All the brightest bits round the "rim" of the clouds were affected. There was no problem with the ND Grads so may have been a coating clash.

Re: Well pleased

Yes Graham, that puzzles me a bit, that and how expensive Canon hoods are.
Cheers Woody I shall be using it on the interior shots.

Re: Well pleased

Very odd - not had that issue - so maybe need to try and borrow a different one to rule out the coatings.

Re: Well pleased

Charles, Canon L lenses used to all come with a lens hood as standard along with a soft pouch to keep the lens protected, Does this not happen any more. I have the same lens and use a B&W filter, they are expensive but top quality, you really should have one with your expensive lens.
Colin.

Re: Well pleased

Chris, I am wondering if I strayed below 24mm with the filter on, ( I deleted the images) as we all know, the polariser cant work properly at wide angles and makes patchy sky's.

Colin, I use B & W for most of my filters except for 2 Tiffen and this one Hoya as at the time there was no B & W available round here. As you rightly say they are expensive, as I recall a 77mm is around £110 the Tiffen are not much less. But they are the best.

Most of my L lenses came with a hood but not a pouch except the 100 / 400.
Charles.

But what does a filter protect your lens from? After all it is the weakest element.

Re: Well pleased

John, I don't use protection filters, if an impact is hard enough to break the filter the resulting splinters would almost certainly scratch the front element, I feel the hood is sufficient to keep the front element safe. The other consideration is , can a £30 "protection" filter have the same standard of coatings as the lens?

The only way to go B+W filters, expensive, but do a goggle & check out test results compared to others, you'll be surprised by results

Re: Well pleased

You are right, I have CPs, ND Grads and NDs in three sizes 82mm 77mm 67mm (that's 9 in all) as you say they are expensive but as soon as you hold them you can feel the quality, mind you the 82 mm ones made me cough a bit. The two Tiffen are from past lenses and I was not impressed by the soft "envelopes" they came in rather than the hard plastic foam lined cases the B & Ws come in. The Hoya has now been replaced by a B & W.
I mainly use the wide angle for interior images so forgot about the effect wide angle lenses have on polarising filters, (spikey patchy skies) so it was my fault , stick to ND grad for landscapes now.
