What is the best lens for a Pentax 67 Mark I to shoot portraits with?

Hello everyone,

This is my first post after discovering this forum, and so I wanted to begin by asking for some advice from any of your out there...

Up until now I have shot 35mm film, with a Nikon N90X, though a photographer I used to assist for a few years (Nick Ballon) gave me the camera body to his old Pentax 67 Mark I.

I mostly shoot observational and street photography (Matthew Coleman Photography ), though I am soon moving to Philadelphia, to join my wife, where I wanted to begin portrait photography, and so I wanted to know what would be the best lens to begin with?

Thanks ever so much in advance,

Welcome to Pixalo Matthew

I removed the link to your web site as links to personal web sites are not permitted in posts, but you can have up to two links to personal web sites in your signature.

To a certain extent, the lens you use will be affected by the amount of space you have available. For me, a 150mm f2.8 Takumar lens or equivalent is a good portrait all round lens, but you could use up to 200mm or longer too.

Thanks ever so much.

The portraits I wanted to take would be mostly on location, indoors, using natural light, so space might not be on my side. Would a 105mm be a good lens for this kind of set up?

I think that the 105 will be better for portraits than the standard lens and pehaps not so good as a 150 or 150+. However, if you are going to be tight on space it is probably the best option for you to start with. You can always get a longer lens later if you want to.

Re: What is the best lens for a Pentax 67 Mark I to shoot portraits with?

The 105mm is the standard lens for the 67, roughly equivalent to a 50mm on a 35mm camera, while the 150mm will be roughly a 75mm equivalent, so a nice short portrait lens. Karen Nakamura has a useful page on the 67 and its lenses here: Pentax 6x7, 67, 67 II - Photoethnography.com's Classic Camera DB

I used a 67 for a while in the 'eighties but found it too heavy and even noisier than a Hasselblad, which up to then I hadn't thought possible. Although the lenses are superb, mirror slap on the 67 is a fearsome thing. If you're after quality, get a MU (mirror up) body and use it on a tripod, otherwise, never set the shutter slower than 1/250. The 67 is, in my opinion, a flawed masterpiece thanks to that awfull mirror system.
