Smile What are the Best lens for Wedding Photography?

I am looking to buy 2 new lenses at the moment. I am looking for a lens that would be great for outside wedding portraits and one that is good for wedding receptions.

So what are the best Canon lenses that I can use for outdoor wedding photographs and indoor reception photographs? .

Thanks

Re: What are the Best lens for Wedding Photography?

lenses i use a the moment,. are the 70 - 200mmL f4 and the sigma 20 - 40 mm f2.8 with the 50mm on hand should i need it,.
you talk about outside wedding portraits and receptions but you stil have to think about inside ceremony venues etc.

Re: What are the Best lens for Wedding Photography?

I think you are wrong in thinking that you need one lens for outside and another for inside. What determines the lens you need is the shot, and this could be one of a group of people or a tight in on one person or a couple, and this could be inside or outside.

There are lots of threads on here about wedding photography that you can find using the search facility, but from memory, those who do weddings recommend something in the range of 18-50mm f2.8 (for a crop factor body) and 70-200 f2.8.

Re: What are the Best lens for Wedding Photography?

For wedding session, I move with two bodies.. Mostly I use 24 -70 F/2.8 ( But I do wished I should have purchased 24 - 105 4L IS lens of Canon, I could have a better range) and another is 70 -200 4L with 580 EX II Canon flash gun.. and I am done..
Of course I do agree 70 -200 F /2.8 IS lens is fabulous .. There is no doubt about it.. but carrying two heavy lens will bit heavy on my shoulder..
But before you decide on lens ,please do remember which Canon body you are carrying.. If it is a APS-C sized one.. Then 24 -70 f/2.8 L or 24 -105 4L IS is just good enough for most of the situation.. 70 -200 L lens will be a hardly used lens in closed area.. May be some close up or individual shot , it will be OK..
Rest is of course for you to decide

Re: What are the Best lens for Wedding Photography?

I used to find the 24-105 F4 L lens to be my fave for these occasions, with 50mm f/1.4 for non flash indoor shots. 70-200 F4 L is good value for sneaking those longer shots, or tighter crops in

Re: What are the Best lens for Wedding Photography?

Thanks for all the answers . I really need to decide now what lens am going to get for each part of the wedding, (reception, inside ceremony, outside portraits...). I mean i have done weddings before with the very little knowledge that i have and i have done it with the two lenses i have which are the EF 24-105 1:4 i used this for out side portraiture but still not sure what this lens is best used for although i have got good results nearly for everything i have used it for. Then of course there is my first ever yogurt pot lens 18-55.

I have been very lucky to be trusted to do these weddings, results were actually really good. However, the experience is so crazy and I was full of nerves, don't really enjoy doing wedding photography but i enjoy looking at the outcome i have achieved at the end when i sit and look at the photos.

Thanks again everyone .

Re: What are the Best lens for Wedding Photography?

looking at current gear you don't have anything 'fast' like a f1.4 or f1.8 lens, this would give you a few more options for inside without flash and outside for shallow depth of field portrait type images.

on a crop camera the 50 1.4 is a reasonable portrait lens or the 85 1.8, might also consider the sigma 85 1.4 which ppl seem to like (I have not tried it)

the 18-55 is probably ok, something like a 17-55 2.8 IS for a crop camera or the 24-70 2.8 for a 'full frame' camera is worth considering but I would get a fast prime lens first I think

Re: What are the Best lens for Wedding Photography?

You need a fast zoom with a constant f/2.8. The pretty much standard is the Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8. I've heard good things about the Tokina 12-24mm f/4, but it is a bit slower but the professional wedding photographer is one who have all the qualities of capturing phots of your Vanue , Reception , Your wedding theme and envoirnement of your all wedding specially the Reception guests the professional wedding photographer have all this qualities and tricks for captured the photos...

Re: What are the Best lens for Wedding Photography?

its an old thread and he does say he uses Canon so a nikon is not going to be any good the lens u mentioned is also a bit on the wide side to be of general use at the wedding, he should have a rage of lenses as two lenses will not cover every scenario

Re: What are the Best lens for Wedding Photography?

In days of film I used a 24/105 and a 70/210 with a 100mm 2.8 for portrait work. also had a 18mm wa for big groups. now I tend to use an18/200 for the majoroty of the shots plus the 100mm still for the personal portraits

Re: What are the Best lens for Wedding Photography?

i tend to use the 24 - 105mmL with the 70 - 200 and sigma 20 - 40 , 10-22,and 50 in the bag, my partner has the 28 - 300 and 35mm and we find that covers most scenarios
