Re: what fillter 24-105 l canon

Filters are controversial because any extra glass in front of the lens may degrade the image through flare, etc. If you do want to use a UV filter for protection (and I admit that I do), a decent lens deserves a decent filter. I use a Hoya Super HMC Pro1 UV filter on the 24-105, but shop around here and in Hong Kong because they are quite expensive.

Depends what you want to achieve with the filter?

When I'm using a UV filter just for protection I prefer the B+W ones.

I never use one on any of my L glass. I'm a stickler for looking after my kit. I'm one of the " why stick inferioir glass in front of my lens when I've paid a fortune for it " brigade.

I've never had dust or dirt scratch a lens but do carry with me an extensive cleaning kit in a little sandwich box

Re: what fillter 24-105 l canon

I did place UV filter on my 24-105 once at a studio session and worse still unintentionally left a polarising filter on top. After a few shots I glanced at the screen and noticed that the image was really soft and low contrast and realised my mistake. I took both filters off and all was well. I have not put the UV filter back on since. The problem was flare from the back lights in the studio. I do carry a 77mm UV which fits all my lenses and would put it on if I felt that there was high risk of damaging the lens but this never seems to arise. You need to weigh up the risk of a poor photograph against the risk of damage to the lens. I can imagine that in some circumstances the risk of damage to the lens could be high and providing you have only a single filter, no bright lightsources in front of the lens and use a lens hood you should be OK.

Re: what fillter 24-105 l canon

The thing that always concerns me about having a filter on permanently is that they are made of very thin glass.
I think if you where to catch your lens on something there may be a chance of scratching the lens but think of the consequences of having a filter shatter.
A filter would shatter far easier than most would think, and the resultant glass shards would be almost guarentee'd to destroy the front optic.
I can see that some people might want to protect the lens but from what ?

This seems to be an endless question, I've had peanut butter, smashed plants from macro work where I normally take off my UV. It's amazing what I clean off my UV that never made it to the surface of my lens, but then I use not baby my camera.

Re: what fillter 24-105 l canon

Always use filter (usually Hoya) and lens hood - except when indoors. But then I'm often fighting my way through the undergrowth, kneeling beside waterfalls, lying on forest floor, etc - all high dirt/moisture potential (so needs cleaning often - never mind the danger of damage)

A UV filter is the final stage for weathering sealing (providing the actual lens is weathered sealed in the first place). I only use one if I am out in wind and rain.

I too would only use a UV filter in inclement conditions such as rain or sea-spray. Otherwise, I just make sure I have the lens cap on between taking shots.
