Re: Whats the best Flash

Don't know about Nikon but a Nikon flash should give you the better communication between flash and camera.

Re: Whats the best Flash

The best is the Nikon SB900 - but the SB600 is ok.

If you're on a tight budget look at the Nissin 622.

Re: Whats the best Flash

If you can afford it the SB 900 is the one to have. If not the SB 600.

You say you are replacing the SB 28. I'd keep it whatever you buy as it will work well with any other Nikon flash.

Re: Whats the best Flash

The SB 800's are getting more affordable now, and they are a very good flashgun, but the menu system needs to be mastered. The SB 900 is a doddle in comparison.

Re: Whats the best Flash

I have the SB900 and the SB600.

The SB900 was free when I bought my D300s

I have to say there is a world of difference. I would have never spent that much money on the SB900 but now I have one I think it is worth the price.

Re: Whats the best Flash

I have two sb800s and am seriously thinking about a SB900 however i know there are issues with overheating and plastic welding the gel filter to the plastic etc

Re: Whats the best Flash

I have Several SB800s 3 SB900s (Which were free) an SB600 I even have a 400 and a few 200s. The 900 is easiest to use and is best over a long distance and only needs 4 batteries to work at it's best.

It has some clever features which include an ability to vary the size of the hot spot and it goes very wide and zooms out long without a diffuser. It's also real smart for working with artificial light and DX lenses but and here's the rub, only with later bodies than your D2X. It will still work with full TTL auto zoom etc, but you won't get crop zooming for DX lenses, the ability to flash the ROM or white balance switching if you use gels. It's also quite a bit bigger and heavier than the 800 or 600, is not actually as out and powerful as the SB800 and has overheating problems if you push it.

Pound for pound, in weight and price, unless you shoot over 85mm with flash a lot, then the SB800 is a great flash that is well proven and in a lot of ways edges the SB900. The Menu is fiddly but like many things you get used to it. The SB600 is a useful bit smaller and cheaper and works very well but little things and more power probably mean the SB800 is worth the extra.

Re: Whats the best Flash

If you want control and you have the $ get the SB900. It is NICE!!!!!!!!!
If you want control but not as much or as easy as the SB900 and you don't have as much $ get the SB800
If you want even LESS control and you have even less money get the SB600
If you want a third party flash cause you are TIGHT on money then look at a Nissan flash....Just makes sure you read carefully and buy the right one for your camera......don't want to fry anything.....
If you want to waste your money then buy a SB400......
