Re: What's with the hood?
Is it the EW-83E? If so, it's excellent.... on the EF-S 10-22.
![]() Since it probably won't fit in your bag anyway, I'd put it back in the box and forget it. There are other hoods which are supposed to be better. Give me a few minutes and I'll see if I can find some details. |

Re: What's with the hood?
Ah, right... Either the EW-83DII or the EW-83H are recommended for the 17-40, but only on 1.6x crop bodies, so that's no use to you. The EW-83E is right for FF bodies and has to be that size for the 17mm end, but I don't think it does a great deal.

Re: What's with the hood?
stepheno,
I don,t know if me brains in gear yet, but the way I read the question I think they might have fitted the hood to the lens before transit. The hood comes off the lens and reverses for use to block the sun, then when finished, you click it off and reverse it back on to the lens they other way round for storage. If thats not what you mean please ignore this post.

Re: What's with the hood?
No...but thanks anyway Towershot. It's the shape of the hood - I realised after Silkstone's post that a "normal" looking hood would infringe on the edges of the image when used wide-open.
